I hope to do some showing in the summer with my 'gypsy' piebald cob. I have a lovely green tweed kacket, which is quite plain, no large checks, with a dark green velvet collar. I plan to wear a light yellow shirt with either a green or yellow tie - can't decide which. Any opinions?

My main question is about the hat - I don't have a proper velvet one but can get one for my birthday - question is, which one and what colour? I want one with a flesh harness but I'm not really fond of navy, especially with green, but am not sure if black would be ok, especially brand new! Though I'm sure I could fade it a bit. I love green hats and the colour suits me but I'm not sure if its acceptable for adults to wear in the ring, as you tend to see kids in different coloured hats. I also like grey but not sure if it would match and probably won't look very proffessional if its brand new. I have had a look at the the CO H2000 & H2000 Square which are popular in the showing ring but look enormous on me as I have quite a big head! The Showjumper version doesn't too bad but I would like a more traditional beagler - where can I get one?

On another note, what is the correct term for hairy gypsy cobs, as far as showing goes - is it 'Traditional'?

Thanks!

I have the Black H2000 with black straps. I wear it for dressage and shows where "proper" hats are compulsory.

I've always thought it looked like a police-man's helmet

but in this pic is actually ok

Taking FMM's advice earlier, she seemed to think a draker tie is best (at mo i have yellow).

black hat with flesh coloured straps - most shows wont allow beaglers anymore.

Black isn't correct for women showing (although it is for men), so if you want to be correct and not look washed out, blue is the way to go - if you don't think it goes well with the collar of your jacket, you can buy 'ready to go on' collars to put over the top (ie in blue).

Green can look good if you do it well, and brown too, but grey and black are definate no-nos.

Navy is correct for the show ring. Black is only correct on men.

You might get away with a green one on a pony, but i personaly would go for a blue hat and get the collar of the jacket replaced.

i've got a blue beagler for aff dressage, but am looking to get a nice blue velvet with flesh coloured harness for showing this year as beaglers not allowed on natives.

Bloody health and safety, beaglers look SOOOOO much nicer and create a much better picture than the safety approved harness hatsd. I KNOW they are not as safe etc etc. but visually they look so much better!! And surely it should be the riders own personal choice.

Bellgrave in the M&M classes and the coloured pony classes you have an huge amount of children. Its for that reason that the M&M's and coloured ponies have always worn harnessed hats.

Fair enough for an adult to choose, but not a child and in classes with childern in you dont want them to think that just because the adults do they should as well thus the blanket ban in those classes.

In most adult classes you can wear a beagler (hacks, RH, HUnters &cobs etc) but for insurance purposes some shows will say you have to wear a harnessed hat.

I ahve the CO SJ XP and this is on a search of navy hats with leather straps for a good 18 months. I have tried on loads and this is the only one I liked which came close enough to looking like a beagler and yet fitting safety standards.
