HI all,

was wondering if anyone has a beagle in pup, we're looking to get one for our wedding present to each other in august and just wonder if anyone has any puppies or know of anyone who has? or poss a rehome if under 1yo we already have a 6yo spaniel so must be ok with other dogs and children etc.
thankies

Don't do it - unless you have time for an extremely high maintenance dog!

They may look cute, but they are the devil in disguise.......

I've always wanted a beagle! At a steam fair the other day, I was chatting to a chap from the local beagle pack (and of course, I chatted to the beagles themselves - they were utterly gorgeous!!!) I know a couple of people who have had real problems with their young beagles escaping and running away, and I mentioned this to him. He said that his advice to anyone wanting a beagle would be to get a 'retired' or failed hunting beagle - he said by the time they get to age 6/7, they're not such good hunters and tend to be either rehomed or - more likely - put down, due to the fact that so few people seem to want them. He said that the older dogs are far more chilled and better behaved - a bit like a greyhound that has come out of racing - and that they make excellent companions. I said I'd love to take one on, when I am in the position to do so - and given his advice, I would get an older one, not a puppy - so if you would be happy to consider a slightly older beagle, give your local pack a call!

thanks for the replies,
is ok am v aware of the time they require, i work from home and we have 12 acres for the dogs to roam in so no probs with the exercise part- spaniels are a bit that way inclined aswell! i also spent 4 years at vet school so met lots of different dogs and learnt alot about their individual natures etc, have done various 'doggy' courses so am pretty set up on the training side. we have thought about an older one but really want to train one from a pup so it hasn't already been working.
