Has anyone got a beagle?

I am thinking of getting one but heard you can not let them off leads or you will never see them again! Is this true?

Has anyone got any other information they can offer me?

Are you a very sporty dogperson or a hunter willing to activate your dog when it's not huntingseason? If not, think twice. They need a lot of exercise and IF you end up with one that you can't let off the lead...
They are/where bred to be able to work independent within a pack of dogs = a dog that's usually very social but doesn't mind working alone. It's a cutie that tends to come with sudden temporary deafness issues, and quite a few are known as escape-artist. As with all dogs, in the right hands they're wonderful.

Not great as a family pet, and impossible to train........
