Ok so I know this isn't horsey related but it wouldn't suprise me if one of you guys had experience....

Hubby and I are looking at adopting a Beagle from beagle welfare. Looking for one under 2.

We had our home check last night and the lady bought two of her dogs with her. They were completely bonkers and we kind of got the impression that if we had one we would have to watch it all the time or it would be into everything and wreck the house if we went out. Dog wouldn't be on own much but it is coming into a busy family environment.

Was it just the excitement of being in a new place or are they dogs with "special needs"

Cheers

My impression is that they need lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of exercise, followed by some more exercise, with extra exercise on the side or they.... make their own fun

Get a spangle - you know you want one mwahahaha. You can have mine for nothing, just watch our for any soft fruit you may have lying around

Do you have any experience of them

Not directly - but know enough about them that they are not a dog I would want as a pet. They are simply too 'needy'.

Someone posted on here a couple of days ago about a lovely sounding GS needing a home. And Cala always has some lovely dogs looking for homes too.

It's really hard... Rosie died a few months ago and was such a lovely dog. Could trust her with the kids. Could run round with her in her younger days if we wanted to but the rest of the time she was no problem at all. A one in a million mongrel. We thought rehoming a beagle would be nice - they are soooo pretty but hubby has gone into a state of shock after last night

Despite being bred for showing for years, they are essentially still a hound and that means LOTS of energy and very high prey instinct, which usually goes hand in hand with selective deafness!

They are beautiful dogs and if you have experiance/are prepared to put a LOT of work in, then perhaps they are the dog for you, but otherwise I would be inclined to look at something else!

Beagles are adorable I have been offered more than one x-hunting beagle. They are such hard work and in to everything you would need eyes in the back of your head.

If I should ever end up with a decent sized garden then I may take on a couple as I dont think it would be fair to have a single x-hunter

No personally experience but my best friend had one and hated the damn thing. Totally manic and always on the go (with 10 fenced acres to roam at will...) and it never did learn recall....

Yes, Hunty is looking for a home for a nice long-coat GSD. Every long-coat we have had has been a superstar, they tend to have brilliant characters (and I realise there is NO scientific basis to this, just my experience!)

I home board dogs and regularly have beagle to stay he is 18months old a neutered male.
he has been owned by the family since 9 weeks .I give him a run in the fields first thing one and a half hours walk out lunch time and a run in the fields early evening .
On this regime he is fine and falls asleep for the evening and is no trouble (except he snores!!) I have had no trouble with him chewing or 'wrecking the place' and he sleeps quietly over night
He has been well brought up from a pup I like him and he gets on well with both my 2 dogs and any other guest dogs -very social .Not sure about a rehome though.

I've got a Beagle x GSD ( I think ! )
He was from a dog rescue place , is utterly adorable , totally lazy & very intelligent - you do need eyes in the back of your head though .

He adores howling though

Sorry , not much use to anyone thinking about getting a pure Beagle . All my dogs have been crossed with something or the other - whippet x , Staffie x , collie x
