I've been thinking alot recently about getting myself a Beagle pup. I've been looking after my girlfriends spaniel recently and really enjoyed taking her out before and after work. A few people have told me Beagles don't make great pets though. Does anyone know of any reason not to get one?

They can be very headstrong, obsessed with food and when they get their nose on a scent, it can be hard to get them to focus on anything!
That is my personal experience of them, perhaps a beagle owner can be more helpful!

But hey, look at the nutters in my sig, what do I know

Im not a spangle lover....but in this case I would say just get a spangle....I personally im not a liker a beagles.......I board a few and they all irritate me......saying that the owners are pretty annoying.

I see them as ignorant little dogs

. Have to agree though, my old boss had a beagle, more often than not he came into work worrying about the dog cos it had p***ed off on its morning walk and not returned.

It depends what you want in a dog. We had one when I was a child, he was a great family pet - kind, loving, fun playful and didn't care that no two people gave him the same command because he was going to ignore us anyway ;~} Luckily we lived enough in the country that he could take himself for a walk if he escaped (frequent occurence) before returning home to demand his regular walk with one of his humans.

I remember seeing someone on Wimbledon common with a lead and no dog in sight and saying to my husband - O look, he's got a beagle. Saw him later, with dog and I was right

To be happy a beagle needs lots and lots of space to run - IMO they really should not ever be in towns, and lots and lots of exercise. If you dream of walking along the footpath with a dog trotting at your heals, or even happily keeping you in sight, it is not for you
