I am keen to tackle my partner's horse's beard. But he absolutely hates having it trimmed. Any tips? Normally he gets sedated once a year for clipping but didnt do his head this year. He is 16.1 and if he doesnt like something just puts his head in the air. He will put his head down for a treat but then sticks it straight back up. You can groom him etc fine including ears he just doesnt like scissors or clippers on his beard. Aside from leaving him a furry monster or sedating him has anyone had sucess with awkward horses?

Thanks

Get a really tall person.

In real life, get a twitch. It doesnt hurt them, and if you are quick with a dog trimmer rather than a horse clipper it can be done in seconds. On the point of twitch, i dont think the normal circle ones work the best...us mini folk cant use them cause theyre too big obvioulsy, so we tend to use one thats more like a "jump start" clamp but without the pointy bits, and comes from above rather than below, so even more likelyhood of them wanting to put their head down. Works a treat. In fact, i only have to use my fingers on many of them now cause they understand the "que" required by the pressure on the area.

molasses lick? keeps them entertained for longer and you don't get your fingers bitten, you would need an assistant (unless you're very talented with the scissors!) but I've used these to distract many fidgety horses. Or a twitch?

Get him used to the scissors? My pony hates having the big waxy tufts trimmed from her ears, so I spent a bit of time just showing her the scissors, making the snip snip sound, gradually moving them closer to her ears but without actually touching her. She soon relaxed with them and now I only have to show them her for a couple of minutes and then she lets me trim her ears.
