I popped down to Beaulieu Road sales today with a friend just to have a look round and get some bargins off the stalls outside. Picked up a lovely bridle for £10 :) I intentionally didn't bring purse to avoid any mishaps on a larger scale!

Went in to have a look around at the ponies, lots of forest foals, nice little collection of tb x nf foals, couple of fiesty arab cross 2 yr olds and a pen full of miniture shetland foals. One of which escaped (it was so small it squeezed under the rail!). There were some lovely older ponies there today too, one of which was a really sweet chestnut 4yr old mare. There were hardly any details about her in the catalogue so asked one of the agisters who told me that they are pretty certain she is a forest bred forester, however she obviously wasn't branded as a foal and when she came in on the drifts no one claimed her so as she has no breeding history she can not be registered as a new forest. I marked her down in my catalogue, as well as one of the tb x nf (just for curiosity of course ;) )and went over to watch the auction begin.

First in were some of the older new forest ponies. There was a mixture of forest run ponies and ones that had obviously had a decent bit of handling. The forest run stock averaged around 110 guineas, the handled stuff was fetching around 300/400 guineas.

Then the foals came through, poor little mites averaged around 70 guineas, a halter broken one fetched 170g, another untouched one only went for 12 :( We watched most of the foals and then decided to grab some lunch up the road and then return later.

Unfortunately by the time we got back the tb x nf had already gone through and they were just starting the shetland foals. I also registered for a bidding card, seeing how little some of the stock before had been fetching I thought that the little unregistered chestnut would go for penuts, and there was something about her that I liked...plus fate would have it that my debit card had fallen out my purse and in to the depths of my handbag!

I've never watched the shetlands go through before and was surprised how much they were fetching, I think one of the preggars ones fetched nearly 500g. Considering you are quite limited on what you can do with a shetland, whereas any of the 3yr old foresters would have made excellant pc ponies. Although I do amit I had to literaly sit on my hands when this adorable little skewbald with blue eyes came through, he fetched a good price too.

After the ****lands were the two arab crosses, there were lots of oohs and awws as they came in. They were very pretty and both fetched around 600g. Then came a really sweet cob type mare with a lad riding her round in her halter. I think she got the highest price of the day, about 650g. Following her were some chestnut 3 yr olds and then the little chestnut 4 yr old came in. She mosied on through the gate, wandered round and then stopped right in front of me. Bidding started at 40g, there were 2 others interested. One stopped at 95g and the other gave up at 115g so before I knew it I had purchased a pony! My first thoughts were yay followed by bugger I swore I wasn't going to buy anything!

Had to go back home to pick up friends stock trailer and make up a stable for newest addition to the yard. She was as quiet as a lamb travelling. Unloaded well and after a mooch around part of the yard we managed to herd her in to her stable. She seems like a real sweety, she's obviously nervous but not skitty. Just needs a bit of work. My plans with her is to get a halter on her and get her tamed to a point where I can turn her out and be able to catch her! Then over the next few months get her backed, maybe do a couple shows and a little hunting before finding her a nice pony club home in the area next spring.

Unfortunately no photos as of yet, will try and remember camera tommorow. Oh and i've called her Megan :):)

Lol, I was told by my boss as I went out the door not to bring anything home! I fessed up this evening, only for her to tell me that she's having a 6 yr, irish geldinng vetted next week :O

Thank you, as I said she seems ever so sweet and I think she'll make a cracking pony for someone.

hehe the best kind of whoops are pony shaped ones;) I'm not allowed to go to sales to even look or accompany a friend as OH knows i am a bloody softy and would come home with something:o:D

Good luck, we bought a 3 year old forest bred NF gelding 3 years ago. Best pony we could ever have and even though my son is looking a bit big now we hope that he should be able to get another year but we will never part with him. He will be loaned from home as he is such a character . He is a cracking jumper and went to Hickstead this year for the interbranch competition.
Foresters are great. cant wait for pics
