Just wanted to share this dog as I feel that I should have done more when I was asked to help.

I run a small agility club and around in March/April we had a collie x called Sula attending the beginners group for a few weeks. Mostly a lady brought her but once her husband came instead.
Sula was kept away from the group while waiting for her turn as they had been working with a behaviourist for reactivity issues. She was rewarded for calm behaviour and was able to focus off lead during her turns. We only have one dog off lead at a time and the Agility area is fenced.
When the husband brought Sula training he obviously hadn't got the memo about staying away from the other dogs and waited with the others with no reaction. She was calm and showed good body language.
I got the impression that the lady was a bit nervous of being around other dogs with Sula where as her husband wasn't.
We covered basics off lead over a few weeks. Sending round a wing, driving forward over 3 jumps in a straight line, straight tunnels, front crosses and she was fab. Working equally well for both her owners.

I was able to hold her by her collar for her owner to recall over the jumps and she was a delight. Sweet and affectionate, and one of the easiest beginners to recall and handle.

Then I got a message saying that there were issues with Sula and their child.....herding nipping behaviour. (She is collie x Retriever but much more collie in drive and looks.)

I didn't go into detail, but I suggested several rescues to contact and explained that by rehoming through a rescue there would be help if needed for the new owner and she would be assessed and matched to a suitable home. I strongly advised against privately rehoming as she could end up anywhere.

Last week the following post appeared on my FB timeline through the rescue dogs for Agility homes page.

This is not a rescue I have heard of which is irrelevant, but anyway it's obviously all gone wrong and Sula is now looking for an experienced collie home with no other dogs.

I feel she deserves a chance in a home where she has an outlet for her energy and I would love to see her get that chance. However collie experienced homes that do Agility/flyball/canicross tend to have multiple dogs.

The photos do not do her justice..... she is absolutely stunning.

Would anyone here be able to foster her so maybe she could get another chance?

Oh goodness, that’s a shame - she’s beautiful. How frustrating that the second home didn’t/wasn’t able to step up for her resource guarding issues. I hope a suitable home is found for her soon.

I sincerely hope the original owners don’t get another dog. Even if brought up correctly, dogs can start to resource guard around young children. You just need to nip it in the bud the second it starts (looking at both dog and child’s behaviour). The fact that they didn’t, has led to this poor dog being bounced from pillar to post.

My worry with this ‘rescue’ is that they’re not trying to do anything about the behaviour before rehoming. You can absolutely fix this behaviour. I had to go ‘home’ to my parents and fix exactly this for them with their cocker spaniel. He was guarding pretty much everything from my dad, and had bitten hard enough to draw blood by the time they asked for my help. Took about a fortnight, then he was fine for the rest of his life.

I would offer but we have a cat, children and a small dog. Not the right home for another with issues right now!

Completely agree with you. I hope she gets placed with someone who has dealt with the problem before.
Most rescues have experienced fosters, but maybe because of the huge numbers of dogs in rescue, this is affecting the availability of someone with enough experience.
Definitely they should be working on the problem now.

I don't think they can. It sounds like she isn't with the rescue, but still with her owners, so presumably the rescue don't have space to actually take her in and it doesn't sound like they have any fosters who could take her.

When the link was posted on fb she was definitely still with the failed home.
They were saying that she had to be gone by the end of the week and no foster homes are available.
Sadly any sort of bite history is going to severely reduce her options.
I really fear for what could happen next but I'm not in a position to take another dog as I am housing association, and limited to 2 dogs ?

A post recently put up on the fb page says they have a great new home with behavioural support but due to a family crisis she can’t go there yet so they are seeking a temporary foster home to avoid her going into kennels.
I believe the rescue is run by Jemima Harrison (Pedigree Dogs Exposed filmmaker).

I am late to this post as only just back from Burghley.
Just to say that the Black Retriever X Rescue is a great rescue which goes above and beyond to ensure that the dogs they help get the best possible home and they offer lifetime back up.
I have one of their rescue dogs now and have helped rehome a few others.
