Beautiful story about horses saved from BURGERS

Yep Widget, i did think the same thing, but i'm beginning to learn that there have been many cases of abuse over the years at that establishment and they never improve. So whilst better monitoring is required in all abottoirs it does appear that this one needs to close either permanatly or until a through investigation has taken place and improved standard properly implemented.

The lounge was a set up by the press. The pony is of course in a stable.

No sensible horse lover would go along with that. Have a story published, in a national newspaper, with photos, saying it's an act of kindness to keep a pony in a living room with all sorts of hazards visible? How totally irresponsible.

The Daily Mail is a disgusting rag known for their lies and made-up stories.

The woman is an idiot if she keeps a pony in her living room. She's also an idiot (and an attention-seeking one) if she went along with a false claim that she was doing so.

Pony saved from burgers moved into a field

Doesn't quite have the same ring to it, just a way of making the story more eye catching to idiots who read DM.

To be honest the beating and the horses penned together prob happens in most abattoirs at some stage. Not acceptable but no point shutting this one down just nanny it until working properly and humanely.

This is a daft statement, there will of course always be exceptions in every industry but from an entirely commercial point of view you would rarley find slaughterman 'beating' stock as it bruises the carcass and thus reduces saleability and price ....

Iv'e only just found this thread, but for anyone on the group will probably realise Iv'e been slightly involved over the last few days.

Firstly I expressed concern about the article portraying how a pony can be kept in a living room by a lady who is trying to set up a rescue. After goodness knows how many insults etc I was told that the lady concerned had over 8acres, all had been vet checked etc.
Following a good hounding of a flash mob, I did recieve some information deeming what I maybe thought was correct.

After asking if this lady did have less than an acre with no secure further grazing in place, ponies kept in a garage with a mare, foal and colt together. I did get rather jumped on and accused of working at Red lion for turner himself.
After being rather hounded, name blackened and private messages every second for hours, I felt rather overwelmed.
It seems I was the unlucky sod that spoke out, but alot of people did agree with me. After an eventful night the rather delirious family have gone. I did have alot of apologies from people on the group, and there motives are in the right place. Sadly I think the family were a liability and did the group no good.

Bidding against a meat man, will then line the pockets of these backyard breeders meaning they have more money to go and breed more low quality stock.
I fear for the ponies who have been "saved" by this lady, it seems lack of knowledge, facilites and money means these ponies may need rescueing from the rescuer.
In this day and age, sadly slaughterhouses do have there place. How many horses will then die slow, painful deaths, neglect etc because people can't put them to sleep at home?

As much as everyone would love to save all the ponies, the best thing we can do, is know our limits.

I would just like to reiterate I do not and have never worked for turners :D

Funky filly what I meant was that the video was an exception and that times happen when people lose temper etc. shettie I feel for you I had same but accused of breeding horses for meat market and taking them to turners! I also have no connection to this trade being a vegetarian with essentially four pet horses! Family are def cranks

Ps having worked in trading standards visiting abattoirs I have on several occasions had to tell the lads to cool off their handling methods so it does happen I'm not a naive numpty! I speak from experience

I'm a veggie too, live over 4hours away, have rescue ponies and most importantly faint at the sight of blood. There accusations were not the best thought out ones ;)

My apologies your statement read differently.
As do I my OH is a beef and sheep farmer, there are times when it is nessecary (500kilo beast turns on you situation!) but you can't tar them all with the same brush of being violent nutters...

I often come across as a numpty what I meant was you can't judge a situation on ten mins of footage and that people do lose their temper etc its the nature if the beast ( no pun intended!) what I meant was that the footage was a snapshot. Ps 99% of the time the lads were lovely and showed compassion and humanity as much as possible in such a role

It certainly still does concern me Widget, these small minority give the whole industry a bad name :(
Hoping there is not too much effect of the recent revelations on us as part of the beef industry.
Also people don't condsider if slaughterhouses closed down us farmers have to travel further afield with stock too, incurring higher costs in a difficult industry as it is.
But agree it seems better monitoring is needed.

Yes especially when it's caught on camera!
And yes I still hold true to horses being better dead than neglected just my luck!

lol, you know you're really Turners wife/daughter/mother (delete as required) stop fibbing to us ;)

It would appear that the ponies are still with the woman but do mostly have homes lined up thank goodness.

And Hillside are not involved as claimed by the daily Fail, they may have played a huge part in outing the abbatoir but that is about it!

They won't let me in the group, which is a shame as I would love to enlighten them as to what will happen if they manage to close all licensed horse abattoirs in the UK.

See they are as shouty and lacking in valid arguments in real life!

You will be pleased to know that they have moved on from wanting closure of all licensed horse abottoirs in the UK. i don't think this was ever the aim of the orginal or main group, it just got hijacked by a very shouty person or two. :D

But i understand that the 'rescuer' and her family have left the campaign group and that the sane group members have reformed with the main intention to campaign for the closer of the Red Lion Abottoir based on the recent Hillside video footage and past cases of abuse. But they now appear to have taken the view that another licenced and properly run abottoir is needed to take its place....which sounds rather more sensible :)

Why the need to get rid of the current one? Surely it would be better to monitor the existing one, the Turners have had the slaughterhouse for years and I believe them to be good horse people, who just need to ensure that their staff live up to the high standards of their family, and to agree to be monitored :o

The horsemeat scandal? I think (hope) it will have a positive impact. That combined with the recent welfare scandal will I hope mean better controls in place for horses going to slaughter.

I am worried that the ponies are going to the first Tom, Dick or Harry to have seen the Daily Fail article :o

Nobody claimed that Hillside were involved, the article was cleverly worded to say that she hoped to set up a charity with the help of hillside. For all we know, reading that article may have been the first time Hillside heard anything about that. :o

I loved the shouting of we are civilised! ESP when showing they clearly aren't and they don't have the manners to let that woman speak. Good for her whoever she is though!

I think most horses need rescuing from the owners on here. Why do people keep horses if they have total disregard for the life of them? Do most of you work for slaughter houses? For many years I have read on here send it to Turners. I have now seen what you believe in sending horses to. Disgraceful.

What? I have never seen anyone advise anyone to send a horse to Turners on here. That simply isn't true.

Have a word with yourself strollon. Unless you are very young, it should be obvious to anyone with half a brain there are more unwanted horses than homes. In a perfect world, all horses would have lovely homes, & when the time came be destroyed in that same home. But like it or not, that simply isn't reality. Life itself might be important, but I think quality of life is more important. I'd rather see horses go to well regulated local abbatoirs, than live a life of neglect & cruelty, or be exported live. In return, I would ask you why people keep horses when they have such disregard for quality of life?
