Sorry- I know you hate these! But I'm curious if I could ever sell me boy or if he's un-saleable

(Not that I'm planning on it)

15.2hh, 13 years old Welsh D (poss. x arab) chestnut, flaxen mane and tail. Owned for 5 years.
95% of the time good to handle, the other 5% a real pain in the backside, is known to kick (with aim and accuracy

). It's just a case of reading his mood- once you know him and can tell if he's got one on, you're really best to leave him be!
To ride he is the same. Some days you can put a total learner on him and use him as lead rein, but mostly requires experienced rider. Normally very good, forward going but sensible, not spooky just gets on with it type of ride but again, on his 'off' days very spooky, bucks (to get you off) and has bolted. Can hack him alone or in company no problems. Schools very nicely but has to be asked in the right way else he throws his toys out of the pram!
He is handled firmly and consistently, and like I say, alot of the time is spot on, the softest easiest going pony you'd find, good to groom, tack up, rug up, shoe, load/travel etc. Microchipped, passported, vaccs and wormers up to date. Can live in or out.
Occasionally cribs when stressed or stabled alot (very rarely)

Originally he was doing PC competing and jumping clear courses of 3 foot, xc schooled/HT competed, if he was still doing that, how much?
Bearing in mind he now has arthritis and is a light hacker (up to 5 miles 2 times a week-ish) how much?

You won't offend me btw, I know as he is now with arthritis he's pretty much un-sellable, but he's really just a typical Welshie as opposed to dangerous, and I'm just intrigued if he was still going out competing and whatnot how much he'd be worth (as were initially going to sell him before his arthritis.)

sorry not sure how much because i haven't looked at prices for ages, but as you say, sounds like a typical sensitive welshie who just has the odd bad day. you could probably sell him if you needed to but it would need to be a strong, confident rider who wouldn't be worried when he was naughty. A neighbour of mine bought a horse she had admired when he was younger afew years ago and he sounds quite similar to yours. i think she was smitten by his good looks

. She only wanted a light hack so i guess there are the buyers out there. A complete guess would be 1500 but pls don't be offended if i'm way off.

Out of interest because my mare is a Sec D x WB, do you find his off days tend to follow days off? And also is he v sensitive to hard feed? I have noticed both these traits in mine and wondered if they are a Welshie thing?

£1500

I was expecting closer to £500 at most/a token gesture amount really given as he can only hack or do very light schooling now!

His off days are completely random, he's normally quite good after time off as he enjoys going out and about again. The closest I've ever pinpointed it to is a change in weather sometimes affects him, if it goes from mild weather to blustery gales very quickly he gets quite upset.
He's on feed by Simple Systems and I've noticed since putting him on it he's a) stopped cribbing and b) held his condition alot more, so yes possibly sensitive to hard feed (previously on dengie hi-fi and allen & page mix)

Is being nosey a welsh cob trait?
You can be hacking along quite happily or just turning him out and he will stop and stare at something many miles/fields away (invisible to the human eye!) He just totally zones out. Sometimes you just have to tell him to get on with it as he's taking the mick, but other times if you persist, he'll plant himself and just get really unhappy (you can feel his heart beating, he'll snort, twirl or just be ready to bolt) if you try and make him move before he's ready- he seems genuinely frightened/upset by whatever it is he can see. Mad hoss!

GigglePig- my mum has an Arab. They're total polar opposites in every single way. Then again she's not exactly your typical Arab
smirk.gif
He doesn't look like he's got any Arab in him to me, or any of the other people I've ever asked, but that's what he was sold to me as. *shrugs* He's a strange beastie, bless him.

Just what you were saying about some days hes a little angel, others hes a little devil and also having to ask him in exactly the right way or he will have a paddy seems very Arab-y to me! I think Welsh ponies have Arab blood in them anyway...

thats interesting about the feed, i will have a look at Simple systems, thanks. I changed her to Dengie Good Doer a couple of months ago and i think it made her more spooky and generally full of it even though i was only feeding her a small amount.

Mine is definitely nosey too! she does exactly the same as yours when she spots a monster, fixes her neck aswell, especially at polythene, i don't think welshies are the bravest creatures
