her mud fever has flared up badly the past week, she has one patch on the inside of her back leg. i kno to take the scabs off but these ones are huge an i'm too scared to take them off, anyone elese horses had a sudden flare up??

My mare is just getting over a bout, flared up with out warning really. I was washing the leg daily with hibiscrub so softening the scabs for picking off, but after a few days of this my normally nice mare was trying to kick my head in, so then i gave them a wash then dried them throughly and bandaged the leg for a few days(wash and bandage change daily).
After this for any remaining scabs i have been softening them with sudocream, this is also helping to heal the rest of the area.
I'm been battling for about 3 wks to get them to the stage where i'm happy to leave them naked, but i'm getting there.

Good luck with it!

One of my friends puts Sudocreme on, wrap the legs in cling film for an hour or so and then the scabs will literally just wipe off. So there is no soreness or bleeding or anything.
