ha ha I think I am becoming obsessed with these boards - love reading them and learning lots of bits and pieces. I keep my horses at home so dont get much interaction with other horsey people - I think my OH is going to put a lock on the computer soon!

Anyway, was wondering who else is a horse owning Mummy and how do you cope with children and horses? I have 2 horses kept at home and a 4 year old daughter and 18mth old son. I get to ride only once or twice a week as never have anytime without children during the weekdays so OH looks after them at the weekend when I ride. Whats it like to have a horse at a yard when you have children? how does it work for you?

I have two children, a 4 year old and a 7 year old along with two horses, one is retired and the other is ridden 5/6 times a week whilst both are at school/pre-school.
They are both kept at a DIY livery yard but we are pretty lucky as there are only 4 of us including YO. Yo does her horses at different times than us as normally we do ours early in morning and after our OH's get home. All three of us on yard all have similar aged children who go to same school and play happily together. We all help each other out, like tonight we had all the children with us so one will stay with the children and make sure they are out of the way when the horses come in whilst the other two and teenage daughter help get horses in

The children are pretty good as they know not to approach the horses and know to watch the shetties teeth

I am very lucky as when my husband gets home from work i go down and do my horses. We have a floodlit arena which is fab and at the weekends i hack. In the winter when they are stabled i get up before my husband goes to work to turn out etc. Been doing this for years now and as long as the horses don't take over the family time everyones happy!

Just thinking to myself tonight how lucky we are when kids were having fun in the barn The_Stropster. I don't think there are many places that allow the freedom we enjoy

I have a 4 year old daughter, I ride when she is at school (part time for now, mornings only) and then she comes with me to the yard in the evening.
Hubby has weekends off so it leaves me free to compete, or I take Rachel with me, she's no trouble.

I have 2 children, 18 months and 5 years, I ride 5/6 times a week. I go up in the evenings whilst Hubby baths and puts the kids to bed. At the weekend, I try and go up early so we have the rest of the day together as a family. Hubby is very good about it and always brings the kids to see me compete.

I have an 8.5mth old and my mare is on full livery as juggling a baby and a business can prove quite tricky sometimes - I ride as often as I can - I try for every other day -some days more some less depending upon how busy I am. I try to time my yard visit to my baby's sleep time - he usually sleeps whilst I ride and if he's awake he sits in his pram and watches from the side of the arena - He doesn't mind this at all - Sometimes if the weather is bad I leave him with my mum or his daddy.

Have a 2 year old and am 5 months pregnant. OH has his own business so dont get much time from him, but have a really great mum and Mother and Father in law who help out whenever but dont like to take advantage too much. Decided to put my mare in foal when i was pregnant with my son and again now whilst im pregnant again which helped me imensely, gave me a really good reason to keep my mare. Friend rides my old mare reguarly, yearling is now out 24/7 so everyone is low maintainance at the mo. Husband and Father in law are farmers so get loads of help with horses when i want but really drives me crazy not being able to enjoy them myself and gets me low when i cant ride.
Really envy those who have fab hubbies who give them the opportunity to enjoy some me and my horses time.

I have always thought it very important that my husband has lots of time alone with his children to bond, without my interference.........................................! Ok so I have always dumped the kids on him at the weekend and disappeared off on long hacks out of mobile range !

I have to boys T whos is 7 and C who is 3 , As missy isnt broken in yet I take both boys with me to the yard if hubbie is working late, If hes home then I leave the youngest with him and T comes out to muck out, ride Tommy .

I would like to think I have timed this right , As when C goes to school missy will be ready to break in, so giving me more time with her and riding her .

Hubbie is very good in that he will take the boys at the weekend or in the evening , Both boys do get out around the yard , its a small yard and they are only ever out well C is only ever out when Im brushing up, so he does help out .

I have 1 4 year old daughter and a non horsey hubby so sadly when bubs was born I had to sell my chap as OH is on the road most days and I wasnt on what you would describe as a friendly yard.
However, on the brightside bubs has shown an interest in horses and seems to be a bit of a fearless natural and one day I hope to get her, her own pony as I feel that having my guys through my childhood was fantastic and made it special!
