Scout and Red sleep outside in individual kennels. They have a raised sleeping platform with a single duvet on. Scout has been perfectly comfortable, so far as I can tell, since he went in there a year ago. A few days ago he started digging his duvet off the platform. Every single time he’s out there he does it. I then put a mattress on the platform but he even manages to dig that off.
Any ideas why? Is it maybe so he can lie on the bed on the floor and look through his pop hole? That would mean planning though and tbh he’s not terribly bright!

I think they can sometimes plan better than we anticipate: years ago my parents had an older dog and an 8 month old puppy. When my mum went out the dogs liked lying on the landing at the top of the stairs so that they could see her coming up the drive through the window above the front door.

One day as I watched from another room the puppy didn't seem to be able to make herself comfortable. A minute later she went into my parents bedroom, jumped onto the sofa at the end of the bed, then on to their bed (where the dogs weren't allowed to go), and dragged a cushion twice her size off the bed and out to the landing where she plumped herself down on top of it with a loud sigh!

I was so impressed that I'm afraid I just left her to it, and replaced the cushion when they jumped up to meet my mum at the door. My parents put a dog bed on that landing after that, and neither of the dogs helped themselves to cushions again.

So maybe Scout knows exactly what he's doing?

She was an amazing dog, she seemed to think about things a lot, sometimes this wasn't great as she could use her nose and paws to open/get into ANYTHING. I ended up doing a lot of agility with her and she was great once she stopped worrying about the fact I wasn't keeping up with her, and stopped politely waiting for me after each obstacle 😆

Years ago my parents had a Rottie/GSD who liked to guard things. One Christmas the turkey was in the lean to as too big for the fridge and Elsa spent the day guarding it. When my mother went to get her in when she wanted to go to bed, the dog had pulled a bedspread out of the washing machine that was waiting to be washed and had made herself comfortable on that. She was a lovely dog but not obviously clever.

Spud our lab digs and pulls bedding out, he had a wooden bed which I put old fashioned wool blankets in. He often pulls them out before going to bed.
He also likes to sit on a particular old chair in the window but has to make a big song and dance out of removing the cushions and folded blanket first!

Mine only likes clean, freshly laundered bedding🙄. He sniffs things before he deigns to lie on them. He will not go on his bed if he is slightly damp or muddy but lies on the rug.

Any 'whiffy' bedding has to be dug up and rearranged. If it's clean he doesn't disturb it ...
Well it might be wiffyness, although it has a waterproof cover and cotton cover that I change weekly. I’ll give him clean sheets tomorrow and see if it helps 😄

Clodagh, I think it becomes a habit. He is not removing the bedding on purpose, he is digging and turning to get comfy and it falls off. I have one who always digs her bed when she gets on it, the other never does. All my beds have vet bed on top as it’s easy to wash. The raised HiK9 beds have vet bed that doesn’t move when dug up. One slides on and the other has corner clips, look at their website.

Well last night I put a large plastic basket on his shelf ( it’s not a raised bed like a k9 it’s an actual built in platform) and put his duvet in there and all still in place this morning.
I don’t think he’s too warm, although he might be cold as he hasn’t had his heater on lately, but did last night as it was colder.
