Help needed!

We have a 3 year old TB mare who is stabled at night & turned out during the day.
She was bedded on straw but I couldn't get on with it so we switched her to shavings, Bedmax to be precise.
Problem? She is the dirtiest creature on the planet & mucking her out is a nightmare.

Any suggestions to lighten the workload?

I have a dirty, dirty gelding and swapped him onto deep littered straw out of desperation. I wish I'd done it ages ago. While I don't like the idea that the wet is still in his bed in reality I don't ever see it as it is drained away at the bottom of the stable. His bed is deep and warm, it doesn't smell at all and it takes only a fraction of the time to muck out.

bedmax is not the best if you have a dirty one! go buy some fine shavings .. and give her a very big bed. she will pee in the banks/side .. they usually like one spot. bedmax looks lovely when first down but grubby on consecutive days. leave the bed you have in and tip in 3 bales of fine shavings. skip out pooh and scape out the wet patches each day.. 1 to 2 bales per week will keep it looking and feeling and smelling good! be fussy in your nugget picking..

Thanks guys.

I must admit I did wonder about the bigger 'flakes' as we have never had such trouble keeping a bed clean before. And you're right, the bed did get grubby extraordinarily quickly.

I would like to keep her on shavings so will do as you suggest and start mixing in some smaller shavings.
