Bedding banks not mucked out for decade - normal?

I have horses most of my life. None have ever been cast.

If one did - I would investigate why a healthy horse couldn't move effectively or if the stable was suitable.

If I couldn't find the reason why nor guarantee it would never happen again - then the horse would be on grass livery from then on.

Piling bedding around the sides of the stable wouldn't come into it

Over 45years I've only had a few that have got cast but it's nothing to do with the size of thebox or anything else - for Conker it was just bad luck. He rolled over too close to the wall/ For one of the horses I worked with he was just stupid! No banks and he'd get himself cast regularly!

All very idealistic to have the horse out but not always realistic - that is why you use banks.

If I had a horse getting cast I'd HAVE to chuck it out....I don't think I could cope with the constant worry every morning

ditto this. I too have been in horses all my life , my horses stables are 15 by 15. Size has nothing to do with it.

I would never make my horses stay out for a risk of being cast.

Horses roll in stable for many reasons, its just a fluke if they get cast and cannot get up.
To blame the size of the stable is incorrect and utterly wrong.

A horse is also likely to roll to close to the fence and get caught in it etc. Grant less frequent but still possible.

I will not let any horses stay out full time here, we don't and will not do grass livery ever.


Grass livery to me (IMO) is the owner of the horse gets her horse fed 24 . 7 by the yard (grass) for little money for the YO - Yard owner gets her grass eaten down quickly - and poo everywhere.

I will get shot down for this but speaking as a YO grass livery is not financially viable.

Is this statement suppose to mean you are superior to us or something??? Because you have not had a cast horse at your yard???

Even at my huge training centre in the 1970's they had cast horses They had huge stables 18 by 18 .

As for having banks or not, my late mare 95% of the time used her banks as a pillow, I have cctv footage of her lying down so she could use them as so.

I only move my banks in spring, as if they are moved all the time they do not do the job that they are meant to, started moving mine today as heading home from uni on monday, was very sad to see them go They weren't dirty at all on the underneath, had just gone a bit of a greyish colour because of it being old straw, banks have been in place since september and not moved once

I use them as a means of storing the bedding, they will get smaller each day 'til a new bale is added None of mine have ever got cast and they've not always had large stables but they've never spent an awful lot of time in them.

I cannot see how banks would prevent a horse from getting cast, if they're gonna get cast they're gonna get cast regardless - unless the banks were really large and firm and you'd need a fairly big stable for that otherwise there would be no room for the horse......but then the horse might get cast against the banks - I've confused myself now!

Anyway, banks make a stable look cosy and keeps the draughts out whilst they're lying down

You answered your question!

If the banks are large and well packed down it forces the horse to lie down in the middle of the box - if he rolls over then the banks preventing him from getting wedged up against the wall.

They don't get cast against the banks because the banks will collapse when the horse digs into them.

Without banks the horse can chose a much larger area to lie down in and roll meaning that should he lie close to a wall and then roll over his legs are trapped folded between him and the wall.

One of the best reasons to have banks is in case the horse develop colic and starts to roll around in his box.

Even if I deep litter, which I don't, I would clean my whole stable at least once a year if not twice, I like my stable clean, I use shavings and she is on rubber matting x
