What is the best bedding for a mare who always has a wet bed? she is currently on straw and it is not absorbing enough pee as it is trickling down into a pool in the corner of her stable. Any ideas and prices please?

my friend horse is very wet , in 3.5 years she has had him at my house we have used various bedding & his stable was always yuk

due to bedding supply problems i ordered 100bags of wood pellets , she had never heard of them before but his bed is now the best it has ever been & she is delighted

Aubiose or Hemcore for me. My mare fancied an indoor swimming pool and spent every night working on it! She is out in the day and in at night and I only take one barrow out per week. It is pricey at the moment because of the knock-on effect of the shavings shortage but worth every penny in efficiency and time saving. If you gave me free shavings I'd still prefer to buy hemp.

Aubiose is excellent for a wet horse... Genie's in at night, and I take out about 1 wheelbarrow of wet a week, plus poo every day. I put a bale in every 1 to 1 1/2 weeks.

AUBIOSE FAN HERE . i love it i only use 1 bale every 7-10 days and i have a wet mare.so its much more cost effective than using 2 or 3 bales of anything else
easibed is what id used for years, but its rubbish compared to the Aubiose.

Hi
I was taught that straw drains the wet, whilst shavings absorbs (hence the need for good drainage in a straw only stable)
Absorbency, to some degree, is related to surface area, so the finer the particle, the greater the absorbency. 1kg (or say, cubic litre of volume) of pellets or sawdust will have much more absorbency than the equivalent of shavings as there is much more surface area on the smaller particles. The actual material will also be a factor too - i don't know the different absorbency rates of wood vs the other materials.
I've always used sawdust but have recently moved to wood pellets cos of the shortage; with a few shavings on top for fluffiness.

tonigh i have put down a layer of shavings with lots of straw on top to see how she goes. if theres no puddle in the morning, then were on to a winner. fingers x
