Bedding Question ?? Such a thing as Sand / Shavings mix for horses??

Just wondered as I am sure a friend said she seen what she thought was sand / shavings mix in horses looseboxes at a riding school somewhere ?????

Just wondered if anyone knows if this is something people use as bedding ??? or if anyone does use it ?? what are pros and cons??????

Also any tips on getting pony to be more tidy in stable ???? seems to poo in the one place , which should be good but he likes to really really cover up his poo , like a cat !!!

he is on shavings at present .

Sorry but I don't like the sound of sand, I remember when I a child and I got it in private places on the beach and how uncomfortable that was.

Imagine that all the time and not able to tell anyone.

You'd have to be extra vigilant bedding a horse on sand as it is too easy for the horse to eat a bit of sand every time he nibbles something off the floor. And that can cause sand impaction and colic. As FDC says, sand is abrasive and would get into the horse's coat and possibly eyes. It's not in the least bit absorbant so I'm not sure why anyone would want to use it as bedding!

Wood pellets (soaked in to fine stuff that resembles sand) and shavings mixed are what I use on my horse's bed. It's very good as a deep litter as the weight of the pellets keeps it from being easilly walked around, and the sawdust is prettier to look at and makes a soft bed.

Wood pellets, sawdust and shavings are what I use and it looks like sand. I agree about not using sand in stable - apart fom health issues you can't deep litter it and it is very heavy to remove.

As to burying - FB does this, mucking out is like the worst sort of treasure hunt

He does it by pooing,walking around a bit kicking shavings over poo, then doing it again. I have to sieve his whole bed with a shavings fork! However he isn't wet so something to be grateful for

thanks guys , I had suggested to my friend was it not maybe pellets mix / fine shavings etc ??she is about as short sighted as me , so sounds like it could be pellets mixture she seen .

my pony is so frustrating with his poo system !yes that sounds like thats what he does !! he really likes to cover it all up , he isnt very wet either so i guess that is a positive !!

go onto rubber matting works out cheaper in the end.My four are on it and I've saved over £275 per month in bedding.I started with straw got too dusty horses coughing went on to shaving and the price blossomed,bought rubber matting, wonderful!!
