Bedding/ shavings advice please

We have all of ours bar a miniture shetland who has COPD on straw beds currently, however, I have a KWPN who has recurrent thrush problems and is filthy in his stable....

I'm planning to transfer him to a shavings/ shavings equivalent product to see if this helps as despite trying every treatment we can find, we can't seem to keep on top of it :-(

What products to people use, where do they source them and how much per bale?

He is a dirty horse, so I'm expecting to have to use 2 bales a week (ouch on the pocket!) but want to make sure I pick something suitable in the first place - appreciate that the cheapest is often not the cheapest in the long run if you are having to use more bales!

Any advice/ experience welcome :-)
 
One of the women on my old yard used to combine shavings with straw. She'd put the shavings down on the bottom to absorb any mess and then straw over the top.

She'd skip out the straw each day and then completely bottom her stable every 10 days or so.

Seemed to work for her, was something I was considering doing.
 
I use wood pellets which are great at keeping my cobs feet dry. Shavings dont absorb enough for me so I much prefer the pellets.

Ditto. My mums horse is pretty dirty and he is much easier to muck out on this bedding. Don't know about anyone else, but where we are based wood pellets are cheaper than shavings so we don't spend as much either.
 
pellets all the way for me. massive convert. was straw and wouldnt be moved but soooo glad i did. cheaper, quicker, smaller to store....bed is dry, clean and well, i love it! he is on rubber matting too. all the others at the yard use aubiose but all i see is the wee and all i smell is the wee. admittedly not when it is down but as being mucked out. no soaking up effect i dont think...absorption haha too early for long words!
 
Another vote for wood pellets... though it's worth spending enough to get 100% pine only ones.... some of the cheaper ones have dark wood in them that isn't so absorbent.
