Iv just recently put one of my neds on shavings, iv only ever used straw so just wondered how often you guys take the wet out? the stables next door take it out every couple of weeks is that about right ?

thanks :)

Mine has a thick shavings bed on rubber mats and i take out the wet and droppings fully each day and leave the banks up to allow the mats to dry out all day.

Personally I find the best way to manage a shavings bed is to give a good deep bed initially. I then take the poo out every day and the wee about every 2 or 3 days. This allows the wee to compact a bit and help to stabilise the bed. I do not dig up the whole bed as I find it breaks down the shavings and makes it difficult for the bed to settle as I do not have rubber matting.

This is my own method and found it works well for my messy horses. I usually add 1 to 2 clean bales of shavings per week. I'm sure you'll find a way to suit you.

I don't like the thought of leaving any wet in a shavings bed, so I take it out every day along with the poos. One of my boys is on rubber matting, the other isn't, but I treat them the same way. I've never been a fan of deep littering personally, but I know some people swear by it. I'll be banking the beds up during the daytime to air the stables when they are out during the day. With them still being out at night, and therefore longer, the beds don't get particularly wet so there's no need at the moment.
