My new horse is terrible with his bed- at the moment he is on bedmax (I hate it and only got it because that's all the tack shop had) and am hoping to change soon but I was just wondering if anyone had any recommendations for bedding for a messy horse?

I was thinking about using ecobed the cardboard stuff but if anyone has any other ideas they will all be welcome! :D
 
I have to use bedmax as its the only shavings my tack shop has had for weeks.
I was tearing my hair out at the states my messy pissy git used to produce for me until i started mixing it 50/50 with sawdust.
Now its so much better as the sawdust absorbs the pee and he doesnt seem to smash it round so much.
 
I wouldn't put a messy horse on cardboard - it is hard to make it look clean with an unmessy one!

I currently use cardboard and the plus points are that it is cheap, absorbant, totally dust free, and looks nice when you first put it down.

However, I find it hard to muck out and often take out more cardboard out than necessary as find it hard to separate it from the muck. Because of this I often have to put 2 bales in a week, for a horse that is only stabled overnight, whereas only used 1 bale of shavings prior to the change.

Unfortunately I bought the cardboard in bulk so have to use it up before I can change back to shavings.
 
Ah right, I thought cardboard would be a good one for him- in my mind I imagined it would be hard to breakup as the bedmax is just absolute crap and breaks up really easily when he walks in it :(

What are straw pellets? :)

I'm thinking of just going for normal shavings- anything is better than bedmax!
 
Straw or wood pellets. Start a really good bed of 8-10 bags soaked. My old boy bed walks and it really holds its own against him.
Or I would use straw with sawdust underneath if I could get it for free/very cheap and be prepared to take a few barrows out each day.
 
i used to have mine on bedmax - hated it pain to muck out. But then mare had lami and had to use it , now i m used to it my messy boy is better on it than shaving. Comfy bed might be good for you eco comfy, easy to muck out and big bales

I use straw pellets for Chico, have a look in his stable next time you're at the yard.

I highly recommend them for a messy horse, although you have to buy them in directly from suppliers but they deliver anywhere.
 
Nedz bedz advanced are straw pellets. I have one of my mares on them and love them! Quick and easy to muck out, smell nice, look good and economical.
 
My lad is very wet and I really rate wood pellets - I use 5* as that is what is stocked near me. I tried Verdo wood pellets as they were a lot cheaper but not keen.

I've really been won over by deep littering - well...semi as I lift the wet once a week or so... the bed is really stable and doesn't shift when he lies on and gets up/down, but still looks comfy, and it's really easy to muck out.

I also really liked chopped rape/miscanthus semi deep littered but it was very expensive compared to the pellets!
 
straw with sawdust or shavings underneath on matting works for mine, he pees for england nd drags his feet making a mess on shavings uses 4 bales a week on the mix is so much cheaper stirs up the straw and leaves the sawdust/ shavings base alone, so is cheap for him
