you can use hardwood shavings but they are dusty and go blackish when wet (peed on!) but if you have a horse with a cut on his legs or the lovely seasonal mud fever the cuts/abrasions will go manky with the hardwood. i wouldnt use it on its own, better if mixed in with good shavings or used as a bank bulker! havent heard of them being carcinogenic though..
