Ok having a bit of a problem.
My boy is probably the messiest horse ever, i recently got rubber matts and this obviously does help me use less bedding, however i am still finding that i am using lots of bedding as he box walks and just mixes everything up and the stable is really wet and horrible in the mornings. Plus his rugs are wet and smelly all the time as he insists in rolling in all the mess
What would be the cheapest/best bedding i could get around southampton? (cant order anything off the internet as there is nowhere to store it all)

my lad is very messy in his box,the best thing i have found for him is straw,my yearling is super clean on shavings

He has been on straw before (it lasted about 2 days) as he finds straw much tastiers than anything else on this planet.

Second kerelli. Wood pellets are great. I had my box walking, poo burying gelding on them when I could afford them. I never watered them, just poured in about 10 bags and watched them grow as he peed and mixed it all together. I used to just sieve it with a shavings fork to take the big lumps of poo out and brush it back into a bed at the back of his box every morning. It went a sort of sandy brown, but I'm not colour predjudiced.

As you have rubber matting it could be worth trying just putting a small amount of bedding down for him to pee one. If you are worried about your rugs try putting a cheap rain sheet over the top which should easily fit into the washing machine.

ChicoMio- Does your stable not get smelly using it that way and the bedding damp?

Eggs- this is what im doing at the moment but he doesnt wee in the same place everyday by the looks of it and its all just going under his rain sheet onto all his other rugs, running out of the stable onto the yard which isnt pleasent

I have a gelding that is the same, his bed is a nightmare. He is just on shavings, as someone said earlier straw is good and keeps his bed clean but he loves to eat it arghhhh

my sisters horse is like this... he box walks (sort of) and seems to like challenging himself to make more mess than yesterday...

we use wood pellets from PLQ and put some in unsoaked, and ocassionally put a bale of shavings in to make some banks for him (to destroy).

the bed is a kind of sand colour, but at least the stable doesn't leak wee any more, and its so easy to muck out. I basically just take out the lumps and anything that is wringing wet and sweep the rest back in. any fresh bedding just gets dumped on the top.
