I have recently moved yards.
I used to ride at the new yard and they always used shavings beds
Wen I went back to livery here they had changed to rubber matting and a sprinkle of sawdust
Before I moved I had said ud prefer a shavings bed n if I provided / paid for this was it ok with them (its full livery)

They agreed n so I have been using shavings as my cob loves his comfort n is always lying in his bed lol

But a few of the other liveries have asked y n do I think the bedding is unacceptable.

Now I know that it's a cost saving measure but it's not one id happily make . . My horse earns a nice bed clean stable good feed and I think he deserves it

However I think a few if the other liveries are now questioning if the beds are adequate

What do u think?
I know the rubber matting means their not standing on cold ground n easier in joints ect but would u be happy to keep ur horse on this set up ?

Am I just bring fussy?
Some people are lovely n just say do wat u thinks best for ur horse bit I don't want to rock the boat either :/

Definitely not! I know at the end of the day my mare will just go in an trash her bed, but I see it like, you wouldn't wake to go home and lay on a flat cold floor would you. I bed my horse up as much as I can, up to her neck if I could! I just feel like it's only the right thing to for her, I don't want her sleeping on what looks to be okay for a guinea pig to sleep on x

I don't consider rubber matting a form of bedding. Yes I agree you can give them a thinner bed with matting as opposed to what you would give without but certainly wouldn't skimp on giving a bed and they still need banks?

Thanks
I was beginning to think I was losing my mind
I know the bed obvs doesn't have to be as thick but I need banks and my horse had got cast with his prev owner so I'm extra vigilant if this
I think the yard aren't to happy as the other liveries may start wanting this :/
But I feel it's the right thing to do :)

Your not loosing your mind at all.

When I roll up at the yard in the morning and find my mare covered from head to tail in shavings, I know that she's had a good night in her snugly deep bed.

I use rubber matting but NOT JUST rubber matting! You can use less bedding with mats but I personally think that at least a little layer (especially at night) is a must! My horse has rubber mats, deep bed and huge banks as he loves to lie down. When there is no mats a deep bed covering most of the stable is a must, I hate hearing horses slipping on concrete floor when they try to stand up or spook! I also hate when horses have a "human size bed" - very often too small for the size of the horse!
