Just thinking ahead as we've had very little rain around here and hay/haylage is likely to be in short supply again. I did notice earlier in the year when I was looking that there was a lot of hay and haylage to be had either from oop north or from way down in Devon.

So, I was wondering, if the hay/haylage supply situation is as (or more) dire as last year, if anyone would be interested in clubbing together to get an artic load imported? I'd be happier with haylage as I haven't an awful lot of room to store hay.

Any thoughts?

I would be interested if the costs add up - though has to be hay for mine as she's a fatty! Rany my hay supplier yesterday and he was taking his first cut - £6 a bale. Usually cheaper when you get it early so I dread to think what the price will be come winter. It's just depressing.

Not good is it. And he said straw is likely to go up and be in short supply due to the crops just not growing. We're still having to hay now - and we have a Welsh & a laminitic!! Thats how bad our fields are.

I have just moved livery and they cut their own hay and currently it's 1 pound a day for ad lib when needed in winter. Includes field ring feeders and stable nets. They put it out also in field. Got foot ling grass over 15 odd acres now for 4 horses so hoping will be ok this year. There is some cheap stuff about but mist places saving for old customers.

I am in Herts and was thinking of clubbing together to get it delivered from elsewhere and centrally delivered etc. I fortunately have quite a bit from last year but if I buy a new horse worrying. I usually only use half of the current paddock and leave the rest to grow on for the winter but at the moment I am moving the electric fence every day otherwise he has nothing to eat! Its bare cracked and dry as a bone!

I would be very interested. dont mind hay or haylage. mine arnt fussy. they eat anything they are given. Im up on the sandy soils near flitwick.have absolutely no grass and am haying still.have managed to find a place that still has a small amount but he is only letting me have it as its through a very good mutual friend on both sides.was lucky to find it.

keep me posted.

xx

Cool thank you very much. I did find additional grazing but I cant afford it on top of my current rent. But may have to somehow, if I get desperate. Ideally want a total move as I have lost the best part of my hacking now the woods is shut for centre parcs and the new round about being put in, means in cant tackle the roads atall. Its a right pain.

I've just been offered some first cut for this year at £5 a bale (I'm near Ampthill) I'm wondering if I should go for it?

Have you looked into how much it'll be for an artic I too may be interested! I don't know where I'll store it though. Do any of you manage to store hay on pallets covered up?

Farmer on beds northants Borders sending hay to Wales at over £100 ton and last year was £65 so make your own mind up as to price around here.

Veritybeaton take the £5 a bale as round here Maulden way they are selling last years hay for £7 per bale rip off.:mad::mad:And since we have had some rain, I'm thinking a late cut.

I'm still looking for a supply in the Herts/Bucks?beds area. Running low again and also have the worry of getting on the books somewhere for winter. I need bigger that conventional bales as run a yard. Any ideas anyone?
