Bedmax Bedding?

how do you muck this out?
iv just moved my horse onto it as my yard sell it so its alot easier
i was told to muck the poo and the wee out and just skip out the poo in the evening but because my horse is messy iv used 3 bedmaxs in one week!! thats £18 of bedding so my money is going to my mum to help pay for this [ hence no lunging line]

just wondering am i doing it right? surely you dont use that many?

alot of cash for one weeks bedding!never use it here but if someone answers you will you listen?
 
If it's costing you that much I would change again... Why don't you use straw?? It's much cheaper... Or rubber matting all over the stable with a small amount of shavings at the back that you can just sweep out daily...

i deep littered it last winter so
mucked out the poo all week and left the wee
then once at the weekend took all the wee out
i was about 2 bales in a large stable put in after the big weekend muck out :)
 
really? because she cant go out i guess its ALL going on in the stable so its doublely wet and deep litter only lasted 5 days :| what one you on?
i was thinking matts but £200 and someone said you need good drainage or its stinks but yeah thats top of my list atm
and straw - she eats it?

#if you're spending alot every week now surely your parents would see that matts are an investment?

And if you bought oat straw, it wouldn't matter if she ate it...Alot of people had to feed their horses oat straw over the winter cos of the lack of hay.

I hate the stuff, its just not absorbant enough.
I used it a few years ago as its what the YO bought in and it was included in my livery. I will never use it again.
I did a full muck out every day chucking the bed up.

thats what i do!!
its pants iv got a little puddle of wee in the corner NOT absortbant one bit
 
I love it! I use unbranded big flake shavings - very similar to bed max but £5 a bale.

Mine are very dry, very tidy, but even so, if they have a messy day its fine. I use it on rubber mats and mine have quite thick beds for mats and I still only use a bale every 10-14 days.
 
Is she not going out at all now?? I would be inclined to look around for a yard where she can go out more rather than worrying about what bedding she is on.....If she is in 24/7 she *will* get through a fair amount of bedding, whichever kind you use.

I used Rapport last winter, and I found it to be very good....I think it was about £6 a bale.

Think she's in 24/7 at the moment because of ringworm.
 
I was under the impression that the best cure for ringworm is sunlight??

Will she not stay in a field where she can see other horses??
 
I use allbed for my very wet horse - Its quite expensive at the start as you need 6 bales of the fine chip type stuff to "set" the bed, and then you add 2-3 of the top bales on top of the finer stuff.

It is lovely and firm, the base never moves only the top layer. You only remove the wet as it rises to the top - Ive done it maybe 3/4 times since xmas with my VERY wet and messy horse!!

I like it as it smells pretty good and is cheaper than shavings and lasts longer.

Straw is no good if you have something that is wet and no drainage - What about sand or peat bedding?

Sorry I haven't read the whole thread so I may be repeating others.

We have Bedmax on our yard. In fact Bedmax rent storage on our yard and store tons of the stuff here. Anyway, we all deep litter. Just pick up the poos each day. Add one new bale every week (or every other week in my pony's case as he's very clean). Then every 4-5 months, sweep off the top to the sides and take out all of the bottom, relay what's left and add more if necessary. You don't have to take the bottom out, that's just my preference, some on our yard have never taken the bottom out of the beds and they have been down for a couple of years in some cases - and no they don't smell!

Alternatively lay rubber matting and use one bale a week so they can wee on it and sweep it out daily.

From what other posters have said, the ringworm infection can live on fencing for a good while, so could possibly infect other horses.
 
The OP has been advised to keep her horse in as ringworm is a highly infectious fungi that can survive in woodwork (an I believe her field fencing IS wooden) for upto 20 years.

I for one would not be pleased if my YO allowed a horse with ringworm into a field near my horses (as other people can touch the horse and spread the infection)
