Bedmax noticed any difference in quality lately?

I've been a regular Bedmax customer for a few years now and have always been really satisfied with the product and quality and recommended it to others. However recently over the past 6 months or so I've noticed that the level of long wooden shards in the product has really become unacceptably high and I'm worried that if I miss one they are so sharp that they could puncture the sole. Also I've had two bags recently where the shavings felt damp to the touch although the bag was sealed prior to opening.

I was disappointed in this as I expect more for an expensive quality product so I called them. They were very nice and a chap called me back but said that there really is no answer to the shards of wood. It does say this is a potential problem on the website FAQ's but it is so much worse in recent months that I can only think they must have switched suppliers or something.

Anyone else noticed this?? And also can anyone recommend a good dust extracted shaving or similar that a buch of good doers can't eat?? Thanks:)
 
We have used bedmax for several years and I have not noticed a change. Although thinking about it I have had one or two that seemed damp, but no shards of wood.

We recently had some Highpark shavings and out of the 8 bags bought, 3 had shards of wood in. We have gone back to bedmax.
 
We have always used Bedmax at work, haven't noticed any that are particularly damp but then I don't actually muck out. But yes, there does seem to be an increase and lumps if wood in the bags. W get through 3 pallets a week and I would say about 10?ish of them contained a lump.
 
My neighbour in her yard uses (now = used) Bedmax & is also grumping about long shards in her most recent delivery.
Last weekend I gave her a couple of my Eco Comfybed to try on the top, that seems to have gone down well & she's ordered a load of that instead & got the feed merchant to take away the unopened Bedmax she still has
 
I have stopped using this as I had a few damp mouldy bales. My stockist questioned this with the manufacturer & it seems they were having problems with their drying machines.

Very interesting thanks for the info , they didn't tell me that today:mad:
My stockist thinks they have stopped making Littlemax at present due to production issues - if this is true then it could be related.
 
They do mention on either their wrapping or website about the shards I think, I use Littlemax and as they are darker than the shavings normally just pick them out the bed as never that many when I spot them and not been a problem. I like Littlemax but really didn't like one of the other wood based beddings I tried, think it was the Comfy bed stuff rather than Easibed but found it had bits of all sorts of wood in it, including small bits of plastic and painted wood...not good. I think you pay for what you get with most beddings. Best bedding I've ever used has been Aubiose but out of my pocket at the moment :(

Yes I did say they mention the shards but there are loads in mine and they aren't the dark bits they are light and my over 40 eyes might miss some:) I can't afford Aubiose either and have to comfort myself with the thought that my tubby blighters would try and eat it anyway.
 
Have you tried Dollar Bedding? www.dollarbedding.co.uk they have a Facebook page as well. We changed to it over a year ago and wouldn't go back to conventional shavings!

I use 5 star wood pellets, fantastic value ( I used the cheaper version), with my verging on squitty boy and would never use anything else now. I ordered half a pallet ten weeks ago and still have five bags left. I have my boy and my mare, who is a tidy soul, both on this and have never looked back. It comes in 15 kg plastic bags so isn't too heavy for the aged (me) one to lift and when wetted as they instruct puffs up pleasingly into a comfortable bed. We have rubber matting so I bed the back half only. Horses are in from about 3.30pm until 7.30am at the moment. Mucking out takes 5 minutes for my girl and just under 10 minutes for big smelly. Droppings only on muck heap (smaller heap to dispose of) and at the end of season leftover bed can go into gateways or into the garden. And it doesn't stick in tails!
Absolutely amazing,economical,easy,even smells good! Won't use anything else now - mucking out is almost fun! (And no I don't work for them - but if you are reading this Mr 5 star ........) :)
 
I have always used bedmax they are based just up the road from me and it's always had a tendency to have a few wood shards in it I have not noticed any more recently.

There may have been some production issues as I am told they had a fire recently. Which is why we bought the Highpark shavings as we could not get Bedmax.

I guess another reason the YO buys Bedmax is that they rent a barn here for storage of the bales and no doubt YO gets a preferential rate.

:confused: Never ever found anything like that in the Comfybed I use & have been having it in for over 3 years now.
If I'd found something like that I'd have been straight on to suppliers & makers for a rant.

They had a problem just before Christmas but I've spoken to them and it's all sorted now. I love Comfybed but you do have to realise it is all recycled wood which is why it's cheaper than other products (I pay £6.35 a bale for 30 bales delivered).

I stopped using Littlemax (Bedmax is just not absorbant enough for my pony) about a year ago because I got so fed up with all the large, sharp lumps of wood in it.
