Someone asked OH if they could put a beehive in the horses field, in a small corner that has been temperarily fenced off.
He said yes without really thinking it through, but as the field is due to be fenced very soon, the corner wont be fenced off afterwards.
Any way i have left a message with the people saying no to the beehive, because, it would have to be sectioned off away from the horses, because they might knock it over and i dont want them stung.
And also after what happened to two horses in the news a while ago, being frightened by swarming bee's into a pond and drowning, i dont want to take the chance.
I expect the chap to try and persuade me ( he is the type that doesnt like to take no for an answer)
So who has beehives near their horses, and who definatly wouldnt. Do you think i am over worrying.

No I think you’re right to be concerned. That wasn’t the only incident with bees this summer there was a fatality in Shropshire too. If you allow them the hive needs to be well out of the horses reach.

I used to be on a farm where there were some bee hives. One day when riding past while the bee keeper was there, the bees swarmed around me and my horse. They were all around my head, I had to close my eyes and kick the horse into canter to escape. Jumped off when we reached the barn and had bees under the harness of my hat and in my jacket. Poor horse was an absolute star, but it was an awful experience.

Mum used to keep the Bee's next to the Pony's field - 6ft away over a thick 10ft hedge. She used to carefully manage the bee's to avoid a swarm.

But accidents happen - there is no reason you should increase this risk!

Suggest he moves it to the local allotments - They seem keen to accept them round here to polinate things! :)

Lots of people are getting into bee keeping around here, there are hives everywhere.
I was talking to someone we work for, who has really got into it, and he said the bees dont like the horses breath  something about it agravates them, not sure what though.

I have done a bit of beekeeping and have been told that bees do not like horses. I would definatly not keep them unfenced in field!

I have kept bees in with mine. I put a strand of electric tape around the hives to keep the horses from rubbing their bums on them. The hive entrances were faced away from the field and towards the hedge. this way they aren't flying at head height when coming and going. These where my bees and I never had a problem. This year I've given permission to a local commercial beekeeper to keep ten hives in one of my fields. You could always give it a trial and see how it goes. My biggest concern would be someone coming and going around my place when I'm not around. The field I offered isn't adjoining my house.

Thanks Lazy bee, i dont think i will chance it though.
Out of interest do you charge for the hives to be on your land?

No, I haven't charged. It really is no skin off my nose to have a few hives; plus I like to see them. The beekeeper tried to give me jars of honey, but as I'm a beekeeper too I have several 45lb plastic bucketfuls of my own, I said no thanks:D
