my 4yr old is been a prat - i think he is objecting to be rode- he bucks and bucks when in trot and canter fine in walk, teeth and back have been checked , is only in a snaffle , i thought he may be objecting to bit for some reason its my instinct - someone suggested trying a hackamore??

I doubt it would be the bit, you would probably get a different sort of resistance. I would look at feeding regime, remember the spring grass is coming through. Look at work load and what you are actually asking the horse to do and your balance when in trot and canter along the lines of has anything happened previously when they have put a buck in and you have lost balance and socked them in the mouth by mistake (easily done especially on a young horse). Do they do this on the ground when lunging? I think it would be an idea to look into this further first before going down the bit route.

When tacked up and lunged, does he buck and buck in trot and canter then?

If not, then it's not the bit surely. If he does, I'd be more inclined to take the saddle off and try again before I would think it's the bit. I wouldn't make bucking and the bit my first conclusion. I would think tack/back pain in the first instance.

Who did you have his back checked by? I had my horse's back checked by a McTimoney at the end of last year who said all fine...had a proper physio out recently because he had started bucking and there is actually quite a bit wrong. Worth a second opinion.

Try him in a french link snaffle rather than a jointed snaffle. Some horses hate jointed snaffles. Also, if he's only 4 then why not back off a bit and just get him hacking out in walk with another horse for a while? Could be you're doing a bit too much with him for his brain ATM?

How long has he been backed SR? And who backed him? It could be that an essential stage has been missed out and he's unhappy about it all. Does he buck in canter on hacks? If he's relatively newly backed and he's fine in all paces on hacks, then I think your idea to just hack him out for a few weeks is good. You could build up to doing 10 mins in the school, just walk and trot, and then zoom straight out on a hack. After a few weeks, you might be able to do 9 mins walk and trot, a tiny canter down one side of the school, then zoom straight out on your hack. Then gradually build this up. Other than this, I'd honestly look at how he was backed and maybe go back to basics x

he was backed by me and did it all correctly from what i no and i have backed manier youngsters - only thing i can think off when i bought him from sales as a 9 mnth old wild beast when they got into the pen with him they had to pin him down and someone sit on him to keep him down to ge thalter on , i wasnt there when did this so unsure if this would have affected him
