Been bitten, WWYD ?

just read the thread.

if it was my dog, he would be pts.

I couldnt deal with a dangerous dog who attacks people, what if he got loose and attacked and scarred a child? or your child?!

i think you have done you best maree - but like you said - owners are burying their heads :(

It is an awful situation for you to be in especially when there are children involved. Personally I wouldn't hesitate to have any of my dogs pts if they showed aggression and the last thing you would want is to hear some tragic news on your local station or newspaper regarding this dog.
I would imagine that the owners, if they have an ounce of sense, will not be burying there heads and I would think that privately it is very much on the forefront of their minds right now, maybe they just need time to come to that decision?
However considering the facts and the injuries you have my honest view would be to report the dog, its difficult but that is what I would do.
What if it did attack one of their children in the face or one of their childs friends visiting the house. Adults also but children are so defenseless.
I hope you had a tetanus injection and photo's of your hand.

I had to take one of my dogs to the vet for a problem today which gave me a chance to have a chat with him (been my vet for 25 years ).
He just kept shaking his head , when I had finished he said that it was a dangerous dog and should be pts. He said no ifs and buts , wether it was rage syndrome or not it was obviously dangerous and should be reported .
I dont know what else can do without reporting them to the police as it is an offence to keep a dangerous dog. The normal pet sitters are unlikely to report what the dog has done to them are they.
Really dont know know what to do next, I am unlikely to come across him again but how am I going to feel if he attacks somebody else ?
I would hate to be made to pts one of mine but would know that I would be able to see the difference between a snap and an attack like that.

My neighbours 2 rottweillers (one is husky cross) charged through a hedge onto my driveway (as I was about to get the kids out of the car), and one did nip me on the top of my thigh.
I reported to police (I was fuming, the person 'in charge' of the dogs, so to speak, didn't even apologise to me when I told him. He just shouted out, they're not my dogs and walked away )
Anyway, police were very good. Initially I just wanted the dogs secured properly, but after a think we decided to press charges.
However, because the owner wasn't present, and i couldn't identify exactly which Rottie bit me, all they could do was give the chap who was looking after the dogs a caution (somehing like allowing a dog to enter a private property and cause injury i think).
Policeman was very good giving regular updates, even popping round to forewarn me that the bitch was now pregnant

If you report the incident, then the dog may not be pts, depending on what the charge would be. But, you would have at least documented one bite and hopefully put the wind up the owners to do something about it. Theres no way the dog would be allowed 2 bites and still live!

As an aside, my collie bit my 1 year old. Long story short, it was totally our fault for failing to appreciate a dog needs walking, despite the household being ill for 2 weeks with swine flu. I kept my boy (it was a nip and retreat) and 4 years on he's been fine. However, I have always maintained that if he showed actual aggression, like you've descibed, with a 'target' (your son) then it would be a one way trip to the vets. I'm absolutely shocked at the owners attitude. If my dog ever bit anyone, the first thing I would do is give that person the choice to pts or not.

OP, I hope you are ok. I found it quite traumatic when i was nipped by my neighbours dog, and still panic when I hear the dogs barking from their house. We are now having to reinforce our fencing for our own protection (owners can't/won't/have no spare benefit money to secure the dogs). I am so sad for the dogs because due to another court case against them (roaming and causing injury and fear), they have to be muzzled and on lead when walked (so they aren't walked), they must not get out of the garden (so they don't go in the garden except for a 2 min wee) and basically are shut in the house 24/7.

Don't always assume that its easy to get a dog pts. I was horrified how much the current laws protected my idiot neighbours (given the 2 incident).

Sorry for waffling on, hope your situation is resolved in the best way possible

I was attacked by an Afghan hound some years ago, and the owners immediate response was to say ''sorry, should have warned you about that one''. I ended up having plastic surgery on my face, just below my eye. The upshot was that the owner was prosecuted for not having a dog licence, so we're going back a few years, and she lied in court. Her son told the truth. I said I didn't want the dog destroyed, but that the owner should keep him under proper control, and an order was made to that effect. This was a one-off incident as far as I know, but with your friends BC, this is not the case and is a disaster waiting to happen. See what the dog warden says. You might find you're not the first to mention this particular dog...

As you had the dog in your home ( a strange environment) i'd be inclined to say leave it-it's not as though it escaped and came to your property/in a public place. tell the owners and leave it at athat.

I would report it. The owners clearly aren't taking the problem seriously enough. Even if they do have control of it out of the house, it has bitten their own children so they are not in control
In their own home. Also think what would happen if a visiting child got very badly injured. They just sound so irresponsible, I wouldn't trust them to keep the dog away.
