Further to Tinkerbee's post "Friend's horse hit by car" I would be interested to hear how many forum members have had similar experiences on the roads.

To cut a long story short, I am currently battling with my local Council to open a new permissive bridleway to prevent us riding on a very busy main road.

Anyone who is willing to provide details of any accidents please do PM me.

Thanks for your help

my sister has been hit by a car on two occasions while out with me. Neither incidents were reported and no major damage was done (except for the car.... )

Why weren't they reported? It is only by reporting incidents that meaningful statistics can be drawn, and no improvements are ever going to be made if incidents are under reported

Yes hacking out with a friend whose horse was hit and killed, my friend was seriously injured and had to have her shattered shoulder operated on resulting in 6 months off work.

Only last month a livery at my old yard was hit, luckily the rider walked away fine the horse is recovering in newmarket after surgery to stitch him back together.

Very sad and scary, good luck with your apllication, riding on the road is so so dangerous.

In my experience the police aren't interested unless someone had been injured. The first incident I called the police but was told there was nothing they could do as there were no witnesses/they couldn't prove the car was speeding (which it was). If I wanted to go to the station and make a statement I could do. Sorry, but that doesn't give people much incentive to report things, does it?

i was hit by a woman towing a horse trailer

, she came way too fast and close and clipped his hock with the trailer. cue me being dragged along road desperately not wanting to let go and see my my horse disappear into the distance. she stopped got out and inspected her trailer whilst kind man on his way to wedding caught my horse and arranged a lift home, (i was very shaken up). She then came over and said very snottily that i shouldn't be on the road if i couldn't control my horse and drove off without leaving insurance details. Took mans phone number as he offered to be a witness, went to police, they managed to contact her from reg plate, she told them i was riding on the wrong side of the road and rode towards her WTF?!! So the police did nothing. I thought leaving the scene of an accident without leaving contact details was an offence, but obviously not where horses are concerned. Horse had three months off and luckily came sound with no lasting damage, but we had to foot the vet bills and horse is now understandably wary of trailers!

hit by a lorry years ago (well actually pony hit lorry which had stopped

)

Giong along a quiet single track lane, great big sugar beet lorry comes the other way. Bless him, he really slowed down to walking pace but just as we got level his air brakes hissed, pony jumped INTO lorry, banged her bum on the wheel arch and promptly jumped the other way into a 15ft ditch!

How she managed it I don't know, but she scrabled straight up the side (I'd got off) with her front legs tucked under using her knees and stood fine at the top.

I got the lorry driver to trot her up for me and she dragged him up the road in canter for 50 yards - lorry driver was fine - he'd been really worried she was hurt.

Didn't report it as not lorries fault and no injuries (apart from lorry drivers grazed knees

the Road Traffic Act requires a person to report an accident in person, and that usually means going to a Police Station so they were quite right to say that, don't know quite how else you expected them to deal with it, they would need a statement from you to be able to do anything

I would always try to report things...touch wood I have had no incidents, just a couple of idiots. One of these I actually knew and lived locally. I had his reg plate and knew where he lived but the police said it was his word against mine! I did everything possible and got a crime number but without witnesses I had no hope of moving it forward. The police told me that had I been knocked off or hurt they would have been forced to follow it up...bit late then though when I am in a ditch somewhere and my horse is galloping off down the road!

Whether or not the Police took any action is rather beside the point, as they have the records, which can be used to show a problem. Although I agree, not much incentive to report it. I think you can report accidents direct to the BHS so that they have the figures to work with.

Firstly this is the link to the Accident form on the BHS web site. It is important that any accident involving a horse and motorised vehicle/cycle is reported as they can be used when the BHS negotiate with local authorities and government to get more Equestrian rights of way.

If LifeofRiley requires any assistance then please do not hesitate to contact me by Email and I will provide you with any information or advice you require to deal with your local authorities.

You can contact me directly on peter.natt@btinternet.com
I am a BHS volunteer access officer.

leaving me with dukey, with cuts all over his legs

That's rubbish, a horse is 'property' and he's been injured so has been 'damaged' it's still recordable as an RTC.

They won't be able to do a lot without witnesses or the number of the bike but hundreds of these must go unreported which means we never get a true picture of how bad things are for riders. Please take the time to report it.
