...there are hundreds of ex racers out there who a reschooled. There are then race horse show classes that I believe are well attended. Is there any reason why there is not the same kind of system for polo ponies? There is probably a really really obvious reason why there is not but could you please enlighten me or tell me your thoughts on it

you might have a point about amount. I have to confess to not knowing much about either i was just thinking. but what i also thought was that they might be older when they were retired and this might have an effect???
 
I did a couple of seasons as groom to a polo syndicate and to be honest most ponies would be able to turn their hand to anything, I don't think they would require the complete reschooling that young racehorses do - lots were used as hunters during the winter anyway.
 
Ive known a few ex-polos, they are usually alot older than the ex-racers, plus it isnt such a big industry, not to mention what raven just said... so i think all of that together probably just reduces the number/makes them slip in unnoticed!
 
My friend has an ex pro polo pony, he is 14 and has just started eventing. He is a tough, brave, no spooky individual. Nothing like an ex race horse...

I am guessing what makes a great polo pony is very different to a race horse.
 
I also know of someone who has taken on an ex polo pony, she is about 17, so nowhere near as young as the racing rejects would be..... I expect far more racers are rejects than polo ponies too!!!
