Hi posted recently about a pony advertised for sale or possible lease. Anyway went to see pony and it ticked all the boxes-except for it's condition. She was very underweight looking and her feet (all 4) had signs of laminitis damage at the toes. The owner said she had had it two years ago and now wore a grazing muzzle. But she looked so thin-as opposed to fit. The pony is late teens but it's shape made it look older. I would have bought her but she is just too expensive given she is not currently competing and due to her condition. Def not lame and very willing and we may be able to have her on a short term lease but I would rather buy-but shes too dear for how she is at the moment.

Why do owners hold out for big money-no one else has been to see her but other similar cheaper ponies have been sold before we could even get to see them. I am not in doubt that she is a performer but I have a few worries about keeping enough weight on her to compete and also the long term damage caused by the laminitis.

I would think that one trouble you could fall into is to take her on loan with a view to buy, fatten her up, fitten her up, get her out and about etc, and then the owner will say the big price is still what she wants (and is now what the horse is worth). Or you will do all the work, take the expense to get her right, and the owner will give you notice to take her back and will sell her for what she is asking.

You need to make an offer backed up by facts, ie, the cost of getting her right weighed up against the purchase price. Maybe cite other ponies that are similar and that have sold quickly for less money than they are asking.

Good luck, hope you get her, and if not, well there are plenty out there waiting for you.

That's what I am afraid of. but where we are located very few ponies specialising in this discipline come up for sale and I am not able to make long distance trips to source one. So I may be stuck between a rock and a hard place. The owner doesn't think the pony is underweight so couldn't use that to work up the price. It's a gamble-but if can have her here for a little while at least I will know if we want to persist.

A weigh tape and body score is fair proof in the pony is underweight. There can be reasons for keeping a lami prone pony on the thin side - you certainly would not want them fat!

If the pony ticks all the boxes otherwise have it vetted. If soemthing comes up - and certainly the vet can comment on weight - then you can re-negotiate on that basis.

From your previous post this pony is up for £2,700? For a good PC pony that is actually fairly reasonable. Do pick up its PC references though! If you call the relevant DC they will be able to tell you what it has done with the branch.

I would be wary of internal hoof problems due to the past lammie episode. If you wanted to compete it I would ask for hoof x-rays prior to purchase as part of the vetting.

Has she been tested for Cushings, bearing in mind her age, poor condition and the laminitis?
I would certainly want to rule that out before going any further with her.

hi have decided against this pony for all the reasons discussed previously and have been lucky enough to source another which we can have on trial who is more realistically priced and in better condition-but still sad as we all liked the first pony but i feel her health might have been more of a liability than I could take on. Thanks for all the advice xx

A wise decision, imo. If you feel sad about not having her now, just imagine how you would feel if she fell ill whilst in your care, (which seems quite likely).

Don't know where you are in the country or what you're really after but a MGA pony has just been advertised on facebook on the surrey horse & pony page, maybe worth a look

Nice looking 8yr old 12.1 games pony on my FB news feed for 900. In Kent. Let me know if you want more details. Saw it and thought of this thread!

Hi thanks very much for all replies. We have the most delightful pony here on trial, really glad I didn't go for the other one. This pony is ideal with the nicest nature and in good condition and we have him on free trial for a few weeks-but can't see him going back somehow. Found him through word of mouth.
