Last week my friend had his 10 month old Jack Russell dog castrated as he had begun to show an interest in his bitch and he didn't want any puppies. Anyway since having the chop the Jack Russell has turned sex mad! He is constantly trying to hump the bitch (or her leg as she's a lot bigger than him), he's completely gone off his food, howls and barks during the night and is just being a complete pain. Is this common behaviour after castration? Is it just a last burst of testosterone? How long should it take before his behaviour is back to normal? Also for how long are they still fertile after castration?

its normal, just an unbalance of hormones, it will go away eventually! can take about 6 months for everything to subside. he wont be fertile so dont worry about that, he doesnt even have anything to be fertile!

I have never had a dog howling after castration, or going off food and I have had alot of males neutered...lol, they normally display the humping and fruity behaviour for about 4-6 weeks, then they settle, and may have the odd fruity session in the park

As Cala said, it can take a few weeks for the hormones to settle down - and he will actually still be fertile for several weeks post-castration. Is the other dog in season and is that what is causing his behaviour? If so they do still need to be seperated I'm afraid. If not he'll probably just settled down when his hormone levels have dropped.
