Ruby is usually a doddle on the ground. But over the last 2 weeks she has been really naughty. Shes still fine to tack up, rug etc and isn't overly grumpy. She just seems really exciteable. I have taken her off Micronised Linseed last week to see if that has any effect. She is still the same at the moment.

Last winter, she was on a smaller yard (7 Horses) she was still very quiet to handle and laid back, even when she wasn't being ridden (off with injury) could turn her out alone (very occasionaly) and she wouldn't fret. This winter she is at a new yard (20 Horses) she is being ridden 2-3 times a week. Turned out every day. However it is individual turnout (winter only) which she has never had before. She does have Horses next to her, but they don't go out very often so although she can see others (including her best friend) she can't touch or socialize with them. She is fine to turn out, but bringing in, she is messing around.

Me and my friend takes turns doing the Horses. She brought Ruby in and then text me to say Ruby had reared 3 times (has never reared before in hand) I apologised and said I understand if she doesn't want to lead her anymore. She said she would though as her Horse can be a pain sometimes too and I deal with her. Ruby hasn't reared with me, until Saturday evening. She got a well timed smack with the leadrope on her neck and stopped her in her tracks. She hasn't done it again.

There is still grass in the field, so can't be a hunger issue. Shes just so highly sprung at the moment, if the Horsesare tearing aorund she gets so exciteable, when before she wouldn't care. She is not the same Horse I bought. I have had her a year and half.

Could not socializing and getting playtime with Horses do this to her?

she probably has a lot of energy - you are riding her enough to keep her fit but not enough to use much energy which is making her excitable - Taz is exactly the same.

she was fine last year because she wasnt fit because she was out of work where as now she is fit! if you know what im on about... if not ignore me!!

also what is she fed? i found a change in feed for Taz has made him a complete chill pill

Unfourtantly she struggles in the school. So cannot school her (we have floodlights so could ride after work, apart from she will struggle)

Also rules out freeschooling/lunging/long reining. I can only hack her. She has a sharer who is going to come twice a week now and she takes her out for a good 2 hours at a time.

She has adlib hay and a handful of Fast Fibre twice a day.

hmmm when you say she struggles in the school what is it exactly? because rather than say free schooling her why dont you teach her somethings loose in the school to keep her mind occupied or turning her out in there while you muck out so shes moving about rather just munching like she does in the field so she will use some energy - might also worth being asked if you can move fields so she has some company as that may also be something as it may be insecurity :)

I hate individual turnout for this reason.

Play with a herd has gone, so you become playmate. It's not acceptable behaviour, but I've found all my horses to be utter pains when required to be out alone, minor pains in pairs or small herds and easy in large herds.

Sorry I didn't explain that very well did I?! Lol

She has a stile problem. Which required 3 lots of steriod injections and pysio. She could deal with being schooled once a week as long as she was hacked out the other days. This school she seems to struggle with (its a but deeper then my old one) i am going to ask YO if I can change field. There is a field right next to yard that can have 2 Horses in. 1 left yesterday and the other going next week. Me and friend were going to ask could we move our girls in there (ruby's best friend)

Pandorasjar. I thought the same. Shes a very socialble Horse and loves spending time with the others. In the summer they go into a huge field in a herd of 9.

When my horse was on individual turnout for a month he became a nightmare, and he is usually the easiest thing ever on the ground.

As soon as I turned him out with his mate again he was back to his usual self.

He is very playful and I often see them playing in the field together. Him not being able to do that made him try and 'play' with me, which was not acceptable behaviour!

Shared turnout is the answer. She is obviously a social mare and probably has a bit of a panic about getting back to her stable as quick as she can where there is more company.

My mare has been the same last 3 weeks ish- i have recently changed her diet slightly - cant comment that i have seen a change as she injured her leg last week and is now on box rest.

But thought i would chip in and say mine has been the same and wasnt like it last year. if thats her in the pic she is lovely :)

I will speak to YO this evening and see if I can move her into the paddock next to the yard, not only will she have a buddy, but she can see the yard and goings on.
