Behind the vertical?

Have heard this term, but don't know what it really means.

I know it's to do with the horse's head position in dressage, but what does it actually mean?

The front of the horse's head should be at right angles to the ground. If the horse has dropped its nose back towards itself it's behind the vertical.

Ideally the horse should be a couple of degrees in front of the vertical.

Ah I see, that horse doesn't look very comfortable, am glad I don't force my horses head down like that!

Well thats a very extreme example.

when you horse is behind the veritcal it means that they have dropped off the contact of the bit. They feel very light and lovely but they are not using themselves, to look at they nose is tucked in a bit to much. when a horse is on the bridle from their poll to nose to floor is a straight line but if the horse is behind the veritcal this will not be the case
