I have never owned horses or ponies that live out 24 hours apart from spending some time in their shelter. Tonight it's REALLY bitter cold. I'm being a woose I know but i'm thinking of them down in their field in this minus temperature with no rugs, and no warm bed and stable :( they are used to being out but I just find it really hard to settle as my horses have always had rugs on during the cold weather and been tucked up in a nice dry stable.
They do spend quite a bit of time in their shelter so I'm wondering if they are ok. Sorry for being a baby and I know I will probably get some stick for posting this, but I worry they are keeping warm enough. They have plenty of hay.

aw, I can understand your concern and I am sure I would be the same. Try to keep in mind that they're horses, they have a shelter, they have forage (which is how they produce heat isn't it?) it does sound like they have all they need to be happy!

I know but i just think about them all night long. whether they really are warm enough. My baby who is two looks a bit tucked in to me, but i cannot feel his ribs so i think he's ok. He's just a bit wirey.

if it helps you feel better there are in foal mares and weanlings upwards all living out with shelters where I am staying at the moment and all appear quite happy and they certailly look healthy. they can get out of the wind and are all unrugged even though they have a fairly deep layer of snow on their backs. these are all warmbloods that mostly tend towards the tb type than the heavier ones. it sounds as if your 2 year old is in the ideal condition for his age and the time of year as its not good for their joints for them to be over topped. as long as they have shelter and roughage going through them they will be fine.
