Hi all
So here we go, deep breath..... I’m finally doing a meet my new horse post. I have been wary of doing it for many reasons. One- being that i am fiercely private- so much so it is probably flaw, so this is partly throwing myself in at the deep end trying to get over it! Two- People can be really really mean on here!

But more than anything I realised that these are the posts that I really enjoy reading, and often click on them first. I really enjoy seeing everyone else’s neddies, so figured there may be someone else who might like to meet mine ;) And to TrishC whose ginger boy is soo handsome, and who keeps posting great pics, and updates, in spite of the 'shocking pastern axis' comment -who has given me the courage to have a go!

This is my new boy (ahem... we should maybe pretend that we are back in late Feb- as this is when I got him, and the pics are taken a couple of days after he was officially mine - hence the winter t/o!)

A bit of background- he’s 15.2 tb x (we don’t know what he’s crossed with- so anyone with any idea would be very helpful- we’re leaning towards trotter maybe?) He’s been out of work for 3 years so very poor, no muscle, no topline, although weirdly very shiny  I got him for the grand sum of £10 He was stressy, box walked, head shaking (actually more like really vicious head banging), gurning monster, but he’s adorable, i loved him immediately and I’ve spent ages getting to know him. Oh i should probably mention that I tore a ligament in my ankle just before getting him, so bought him having never ridden him:eek: what a fool:eek: but it was probably the best thing for us both, because i have spent loads of time doing ground work, getting to know him, building up trust on both sides, lunging, long-reigning, we've been out for long hacks in hand - i think the locals must think I’m a bit barmy- loll and have done our first in-hand show recently where he was an absolute saint (we came 3rd…cough out of 3….but hey we didn’t stand on any childrens heads, which was the main goal!).

So here he is- back in the cold, all be it sunny late February morning:

and on day one- giving me the ‘ you think im coming in…hahah you’ve got NO chance’….

Looks a very sweet nice boy. Having known a couple of trotters I'd say from the pictures you could be right, for some reason all trotters I've known have all had fabulous shiney healthy coats...even the very old wonky boy currently on our yard has a coat to make the young fit healthy horses look like shag pile carpets!!!

He's lovely looks like a horse for life. ;)

No comment on confo from me, just wanted to say what a shine he has on him in that first photo! He looks a lovely boy, and I can see why you think trotter, he does resemble a trotter I know. and as for all the in-hand work 'slow and steady wins the race' :)

£10!! What a bargain buy haha!

No idea on breed, but he looks in lovely condition :)

Well done and good luck with him!

hes gorgous - when i started reading your post i was thinking oh dear what has she bought but seeing the piccys hes lovely !!! and yes slow and steady definatly wins the race !!

Thanks for the nice comments so far! I know he is super shiny isnt he!

Im really interested to read that a lot of you think he could be part trotter too. Does anyone here have a tbx trotter - we could compare?!

How old is he? He has that look of 'wisdom' about his face! Lol. Have you ridden him at all yet? I think he has a nice face and certainly looks in good health if that's in Feb. He may be slightly pigeon-toed and over at the knee on his offhind but it may well just be the way he's stood in the picture - my horse tends to manage to stand with his elbow sticking out odd if I ever want to take a pic of him! Lol

I don't know re trotter - how does he move? There is something almost cleveland bay about his head to me (although I know little of them either!! In fact i am rubbish and will shut up now!!!)

what on earth have you put on his coat???? where i can buy it! I wouldn't need a mirror ever again!

(I would say possibly a little bit of something irish in there?)

Coat looks fantastic for February, not very long either.

He could be a Standardbred which are trotters but I'm no expert. I think they're very closely related to Thoroughbreds.

Looks like a bargain for £10!

Hes 14 so a decent age haha! He hasnt been out much and is scared of his own shadow...literally but he is a total dope now, will just stand and rest his head on my shoulder over the stable door surveying the world....hes got the best view on the yard lol.

I have ridden him now, hes got a lovely smooth walk and canter, but by golly his trot is the strangest one ive ever sat to...dont really know how to describe it other than bumpy! Ive been having problems with his offhind leg being stiff, would 'over the knee' be an indication of further problems in joints in this leg?

Thats his winter coat too:eek: his summer cost is almost fully through now and hes gone a shiny bright bay now! Back in those pics he'd been on his new feeding regime for about a week- baileys no.4, vegetable oil, d&h balancer and alfa a. Weirdly i think hes just naturally quite shiny, cos he was the same when i got him only a tad thinner- he was just on scoop of baileys and mollichop then.

Wow, gorgeous coat! And his trot looks very impressive, what a sweet look he has too.

It's not possible to be "over at the knee" on the hind legs (there's no knee to be over ;)). He is a bit over at the knee in front but that's quite typical in TB types and some people prefer it as they think it puts less pressure on tendons.

His off-hind looks like the hoof is pointing inwards a lot on the first picture hence "pigeon-toed" but it looks like he may have just pivoted around on it and not moved it yet so hard to say! Do you have any side-on pictures of him standing square?

oh he's lovely, what a bargain!

my almost perfectly conformed (for breed standard) connemara is a vets dream and has every structural problem going, our very oddly put together 25 year old ex showjumper however is the soundest horse I've ever met, so while I think decent conformation helps, there is a large portion of luck involved as well (IMO of course!).

:p

He's lovely...we had a wonderful rescue boy who was possibly a tb x trotter type - super shiny and whose idea of a winter coat was four extra hairs!!! Dread to imagine what had happened to him before we had him, but he became the most trusting and trustworthy chap you could hope for. :) Very best wishes for yours.

I am so jealous of his shine! Just look at that! It's gorgeous!

Congrats on your new boy, he looks wonderful. Best wishes for your success and fun :)

Thanks!

Yeh i know almost nothing about my boys history, and dont really want to tbh, hes had a rough time somewhere down the line, got the scars to prove it. But you cant change the past, only look forward to the future and enjoy the present.

His winter coat was very fine....ive been buying up all the 'out of season' discounted winter rugs recently in preparation for this winter. Hes being such a big wimp at the moment as we've been having buckets of rain here the past few weeks and gale force winds, gawd help us if it gets down to -15 like last year!

Are you sure there's actually any TB in there? He looks 100% Standardbred to me (I have two and about to get two more!)

My Standie gelding is stressy and slings his head around when he's confined, and he has a HORRIBLE trot too, currently doing some intensive schooling to make it rideable!

I very much doubt his over at the knee conformation (if indeed it is, it could just be how he stands) would affect him that much. As said it is generally preferred for a horse to be over at the knee than back at the knee and a lot of TBs seem to be a bit this way. My pony is welsh x something and has quite an odd action and will lope on occasion. I wonder if that is what yours is doing? I have often wondered if mine is trotter x to be honest. If he does actually trot properly he can go at some rate and it looks fab (although at 24 he doesn't do it so much now). To be honest for £10 you cannot really go wrong and at 14 he has plenty of years ahead. I don't believe any horse has perfect conformation so I really don't take it into consideration that much (unless something is hideously wrong!).

Enjoy him, he looks like he will be fun!

Thanks ladyt. I cant believe my luck- and im sure he cant believe his too- he was headed for Beeston if he didnt sell.

My aims are just to do a bit of low level fun stuff this year, an intro test maybe a prelim, i've free schooled him over a jump or too and he's got quite a pop in him. so will just work on building some muscle and see what happens!

Hummm now youve got me thinking -I need to dig out his passport to see whether it actually says tb on it...or whether he could indeed be full standard bred. Do you have any pics of your full standardbred, i would really love to see him!?

Id go with standardbred as well, we own 2 but i also have a friend who breeds them.
This is Brywins Arctic Ice aka Ed, hes been out of work for about 18months so doesnt look his best, but he is the nicest, kindest horse ive ever met...hes also incredibly thick lol! I know hes not the most handsome of horses & not everyones cup of tea, but what he lacks in looks he makes up for with personality :)

& this is Teifi Tilly, she was 12 & untouched when we had her, again a very sweet & lovely little mare (its not me sitting on her, its a friend of mine)

If anyone is mean tell them to bleep off!

Wow he is stunning, like a brand new shiny conker!

I personally think hes conker x mahogony x black beauty

:-)
xx

Good for you posting pics, this forum would be boring if no one did. I saw a thread someone started the other day along the lines of 'Let's see your (e.g cobs) I've got one but can't be bothered with all that imageshack nonsense' and everyone complied! I'd have said 'if you can't be arsed, why should I?' :D

Wow - put the sun glasses on - what a lovely shiny coat. Wish my girls would look like that.

My first impression was SB - as there is a lot of TB in the SB bloodlines he could be partly TB but some way back. Being an SB may be why his trot is a bit rough. Does he pace at all?

Trotting poles help a great deal to improve an SB's trot.

He was a lucky boy to have found you. HAve lots of fun with him

Goooooooooorgeous, look at his coat, it's stunning! I think he's got a very kind expression, and it sounds like you're doing absolutely all of the right things by establishing trust and groundwork. It'll make the riding part loads easier and more enjoyable I think! :)

And thanks so much for your lovely comments, really glad that the big ginger Monty thing of shocking-pastern-axis-ness and I can be of use to someone other than the entertainment industry :D

Now you have to keep posting updates... go you! :)
