I phoned up an insurance company for a quote about a month ago and asked if they could send out policy details so I could have a look whilst I decided. I went with another company though.

I have just received a letter from them sayaing they have not received my payment yet and if I do not wish to continue then I need to pay for the month they have covered me for.

I never said I wanted the insurance.

They aren't allowed to do this, phone them up and tell them you didn't ask for the cover. If it is a big company they should have recorded your call - this happened to me with a well known company and they had to retract it, not least as it is illegal to have something insured by 2 companies at the same time!
Whatever you do, don't pay!

Depends how you did this really, was it something you did online?

I'm sorry but we have had several people who have got quotations through a website for out company. The quote/premium is stated in black and white as is the cover that has been requested. there is then a very visible button giving the option for the person to proceed (think it says "buy now" or something along those lines.

People have on numerous occasions submitted the form (this can only be done if "buy now" has been selected and bank details have been provided) and THEN when we have issued their policy they THEN decide after a few weeks they didn't actually want the policy and we are expected to return all their money! WHY? 9 times out of 10 we end up doing it aswell and it does get pretty annoying as, at the end of the day that person as effectively entered into an insurance contract but then expect to terminate it without a charge. We (the insurers) have kept our part of the bargain - ie insuring your horse.

I am not saying you are at fault, I do not know who you are insured with, but check what you have submitted, check what you actually asked. If you truly only asked for a quote then sure you should not be paying out but if you have actually entered into a contract then I am afraid you may end up having to pay something.

I cancelled my AA cover earlier this year, I did it too late, the cover had already commend and i was charged the admin fee but i knew this was likely to happen as this is normal. The work the people/underwriters do isn't for free.

Sorry, as I said this is not a rant against you but i do get annoyed with all the "the insurance companies are the bad guys" type views.
