I posted a while back about how I ordered a load of haylage, they delivered it 2.5 hours late so it was dark by the time they eventually got here. In day light, i noticed there were lots of holes in nearly all the bales, some were covered over by them putting stickers on and some were left open (also i then covered them over) including a massive hole in one of them. The bale i opened first was also covered in white mould - a good percentage of the bale was white mould which they refused to eat, very dusty.

I phoned up, left messages, they never got back to me. Eventually they answered off a witheld number and said to me that they must of got holes in when they pushed them off the trailer at my end and that the white mould is perfectly normal.

Since then, i have today tried to open my next bale - it is very very slimy, very wet all the way through and smells off. I have since pulled back the stickers they stuck on the rest of them and smelt/felt it and all are very slimy and don't smell sweet.

I have phoned up again and was told to phone back in an hour to which there was no answer - surprise surprise!

What can I do? I spent quite a lot of money buying this haylage off them.

taped over holes are generaly where the bale spike is used to move bales off the field and is quite common, also a little white mold on the surface is not unusual ,but rank smelling slimy haylage is definately off. Bad haylage can kill. Tell them to take it away, if they refuse, tell them you are getting your vet to look at it ,prior to making a county court claim against them(AND DO THIS!)

Bugger! Hate it when this happens, really winds me up when you pay good money and get a load of c**p. :( Some haylage is wetter than others but if it smells bad then it's probably off. I try not to accept haylage that has patches stuck on them, you don't know how long the holes have been there before being noticed. I had one delivered not so long ago that had a hole in the side of it. It had gone off within a couple of days. Had green mould throughout and was really hot. My supplier replaced it no quibbling though. Majority would rather do that than lose your business.
Not sure what to suggest apart from keep ringing them and insist they come and pick it up and refund your money. They may offer to replace it but if all the bales are the same, I would rather have my money back.
Do you know the people you had the haylage from? Were they recommended to you? I never buy from anyone I don't know or have not been recommended to me.
I would ring them first thing in the morning and keep ringing till you get a satisfactory answer from them.
Hope it all works out for you. :)

tel them to please collect all of the stuff and return your money. tell them if they dont you will charge them for disposal and you will be useing the small claims court to recover your losses

Did you get a receipt? If not then I think you are probably scuppered to be honest :(
Um I dont agree I would ask the HM revenue and customs for advice if the seller dosent think he needs to sort things out because you paid cash!!!! ... its up to the bussiness selling the goods to declare what they are doing to the revenue not the private induvidual who rang up and ordered the haylage how it was paid dosent matter the stuff was bad and not fit for purpose...

They weren't recommended, i saw an advert saying 'quality haylage for sale'.

When i first bought them, they told me i had had the last load/bales from them as they wanted me to have a few extra so that it shifted the last ones out the way. Then a few days later, i see them advertising saying they have quality haylage for sale - so i obviously didnt have the last off them.

Re the person who said it's just where they have been spiked on loading - yes they were spiked on the end on each bale for loading (they put patches over them) but there are loads of holes on the 'body' of each bale (some they have put patches over, some were left) but i immediately covered them over.

They are slimy and don't smell 'sweet' .

Am i to take all the outer wrapping off and leave the net wrapping on? At the mo, i have just smelt under the holes and pulled bits out and felt under the wrapping. The bales are extremely hot, very wet/slimy and doesn't smell sweet. They certainly don't want to eat it either. I was afraid they wouldnt take them back if i took the wrapping off all of them.

Just to point out that a receipt is by no means the only proof of purchase. The buyer has the goods and can presumably provide evidence of whom she purchased them from. Seems like a simple breach of contract claim to me and possibly sale of goods not satisfactory for purpose. I would phone them and send them a letter threatning court action and if that doesn't work, issue a small claim against them and, as above, charge for disposal plus any additional charges in replacing the haylage.

Haylage bales MUST be kept air tight it will decompose go mouldy heat up etc very quickly It is a bad idea to move them with a spike and then try to reseal as air gets in they should only be moved with a grab and even the tinyest hole can ruin the whole bale
if you unwrap it must be used within a few days so its best to unwrap as you need it, it sounds like the people making it dont realy know what there doing I would reject the lot and go elswhere....

Yes I know it needs to be airtight with no holes etc. What I meant was do i take the outer wrapping off to show them?
No you opened
up some and decided that its all going to be ****???? if so I would let them come and take it away the last thing you want is open bales of rotting haylage if they want to see it they can open it..
I would suspect they know its **** hence not playing ball they are hoping to wear you down
so stick to your guns.. keep after them...

Contact Trading Standards or your local consumer group - they will contact the seller on your behalf and have a chat with them - I usually find thats enough to get them to jump

We make and sell haylage, this time of the year is a nightmare, the majority of the haylage has now been sitting in a bale for approx 10months, we have had to collect and refund or replace the odd "off " bale due to bales being holed, birds are our biggest culprit,if their beaks don't pierce the wrap their claws do. I can sympathise with you about getting your money back, but it will be hard to find decent hay or haylage at this time of the year.
