Here we go again...
On Radio 4's Farming Today this morning David Heath (defra minister) claimed that he shut down NED because it was not fit for purpose as a food dafety check. No, they shut it down BEFORE the horsemeat scandle as part of a quango centred cost reducing exercise which the industry warned would have a huge negative effect on traceability which it immediately did when criminal elements realised how easy food fraud had become. With the EU now demanding a compulsory equine database as part of the revised zootechnics législation some fast back pedalling / eating of words :-) will have to take place over the next few months.

I cannot quote verbatum but when asked why the UK had so many PIO's/or if they could be reduced did some EU legislation buck passing - when of course France has a single PIO.

Even France with its so called perfect passport system has found traces of bute in its beef.

That is not a surprise as we know the biggest horse abattoir in France imports horses from other member states, without correct documentation, for slaughter. Easy in an EU without borders. As with the Uk there is a need for proper controls.

I can tell you when I compete in France, my NEDS are not allowed off the lorry or through first vet gate if vaccinations are not up to date. M/chips are also checked.

I return to my post Why is DEFRA saying EU legislation prevents ONE PIO when apparently France does have one PIO.
