Being lead

So I got back on polo pony this weekend, as soon I was in the saddle I pretty much knew that he was going to be a little ***** as he hadn't been ridden in a while, so I jumped off and put his head collar on over his bridle, attached the lead rope and asked someone in the family to lead us for about 10/15 mins along the road and up the lane with the scary bales in it.
(a while ago I would never have let anyone lead me) Because I thought it was a step up from being bucked off. I was in shock as he was an absolute star, all his attention was away from his surroundings and focused on said family member, but I was still in control. I've done this both saturday and today, he didn't even look at the donkeys the second time!!!
But I was just wondering if this will be productive and if/how i can progress from this?

Just a question first, how are you riding him? Polo ponies arent trained in the way normal horses are (sorry if you know this, don't mean to be patronising!) so maybe he is fighting something you are doing, or he is constantly confused by aids you are giving?

And I'm riding him like 'english style' if thats what you mean, the riding style hasn't been a problem, as he seems to understand what I'm asking (I know about neck reining etc), I've also had everything checked but he's just been bucking and napping although once we tried having someone next to us with a long lead rope and no real control just distracted him from the silliness we've been getting.
 
Hmm, in that case maybe he's lacking confidence? Having been used to charging about with loads of other horses and exercised with other horses etc, to now being ridden out alone. Have you got anyone to ride out with?

So in answer to your question! Perhaps being led for a week or two could be good to build up his confidence.
 
Perhaps and well I've got some horsey friends in the village, but I didn't really want to ride out with them until he starts being sensible, as I didn't think it was fair. But I might ask my grandad (80) to go out with me on his mare (32) LOL I know there both old, but safe and VERY sensible.
