A close relative of mine aquired a dog just over a year ago. The dog is a bullmastiff, really gorgeous dog. When they got him he was 7 months old.
The problem is they have never done any training with him and kept coming up with the excuse that 'he is still a pup' blah blah. Dog is now nearly 2YO, huge and weighs 10st and has apsolutely no manners or knows no dicipline.
This year dog has wrecked their house, furniture, their personal belongings etc. They take him for a walk but can't let him off the lead because he wont listen to recalls. He constantly pull on the lead and has no social kill with other dogs. Yesterday we took him for a walk and we met another little dog, my relatives dog got excited and dragged her off her feet and ran to the other dog, other dog owner lifted his dog out out the way, but relatives dog kept jumping up at him to try and get at his dog (my relatives dog isn't in any way aggresive, he just wants to play, but because the sheer size of him, he is more than capable of knocking some one over and hurting them).
Even after this my relative still insists that her dog isnt 'that bad' but that situation could have been a hell of alot worse. I suggested to her that she gets some one on one with a good trainer but says she doesn't want to spend that kind of money. Even if it benefits her and her house hold in the longer term.
I know really it isn't any of my business, but I can see this getting worse. Relative still insists that her dog is still young and seems to think when he is mature he will settle down, and in my experience, I cant see this happening.
Sorry, seemed to have rambled a bit, hope it all makes sence, but Im just a bit frustrated with it.
Any advice on any more advice I can give my relative would be very welcome x
