Some of you may remember that my beautiful smile inducing pony went very lame a few weeks ago with suspected lymphangitis / cellulitis. Vets then suspected a fracture due to the severity of the lameness and the ineffectiveness of iv antibiotics overnight. X rays were inconclusive. He was box rested for a week and no improvement. Fast forward a couple of weeks and still no improvement, so he went into the vets for further tests. It looks as though he will not be ridden again. I am absolutely distraught and desperate for a miracle.

Extract from vet report below for further detail. I can't stop crying, I have bought him an Arc Equine unit and hoping it is as good as it's meant to be

"Radiographs revealed mild changes to the sagittal ridge of the distal end of the cannon bone....ultrasonographic examination showed moderate swelling of the soft tissues around the fetlock and cannon bone, and marked thickening and increase of fluid in the fetlock joint.....MRI scan revealed a focal area of damage in the cartilage and extending deep into the bone of the distal condyle of the cannon bone"

They have injected hyuralonic acid and irap therapy into the joint to try to minimise damage and reduce inflammation. Diagnosis is "guarded to poor for return to athletic activity"

We still don't know how he did it, he was in his stable overnight but came out lame. Best guess is that this massive trauma was caused by either kicking the wall very very hard, or getting cast and whacking it while getting up. Forgive my indulgence but the photo attached was just before he went lame, this horse gave me my confidence back and put a smile on my face please no criticism of position / riding ability etc, I'm upset enough already http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/forums/album.php?albumid=4960&pictureid=20638

Thanks for reading, port and cheese on offer

thank you MrsM, he's going back to the vets in a couple of weeks to see whether the injections have had any effect. Poor boy has been so patient throughout, I am devastated I can't do more to help him, i feel I have really let him down

Really sorry to hear this, it is so awful when something like this happens and worse still when your not even sure how they managed to do it.

Miracles can and do happen sometimes, keep praying.

Get Karen on the case hun :)

Always here for you, said so on facebook, ARC has been show to dramatically help some horses. Hooves and fingers crossed xxx

Thanks, it is a dreadful end to a really crappy 12 months. I had threat of redundancy hanging over me for 11 months, thankfully all resolved now and am happy in my new job, but it has been very stressful

Thanks hon, have just started measuring swelling so can see how much difference Arc unit is making xx

Thank you FW and VOC If anyone has any favours they can call in from The People Upstairs, please consider us. I think I have had a luck bypass recently

I'm so sorry for you but you mustn't feel you've let him down you've been with him all the way and now are putting everything into helping him heal. Fingers crossed for a positive outcome!

Thank you all; BtE I know I have tried everything I have thought of, but I can't help with the "what if" scenarios. Which I know is ridiculous given that we don't know what happened. The only thing I have not gone ahead with is surgery to flush the joint out, put a camera in there and get a better view of the exact extent of the damage, but as the vet has said they wouldn't actually be able to repair anything I didn't want to put him throught the stress and trauma of a GA and associated recovery
