A friend has a 4 year old mare that she'd like to do inhand with: what classes could she do? As yet u bitted, would obviously need that done first. TIA.

Foreign breeds, best condition / turnout / fun classes. Best handler is always fun.

Some of the heavy horse classes are restricted to British breeds only so they’re not always the best option but might be worth joining your local heavy horse group and seeing what’s available.

There are a few heavy horse associations around the country which she may enjoy joining. They arrange working weekends (just weekend get aways) and their own shows as well as supporting with advice and support on showing and everything else.

Search Facebook groups for heavy horse associations.

We holidayed twice in the Rocky Mountains YMCA and the Belgian draughts pulled traditional hay wains to take guests to the evening open air camp fire events. I believe they pulled sleds in winter, but dont know. Later, in 2010, we went to a heavy horse show in Grass Valley, California, and there was a team of Belgian draughts. All these horses were driven, not ridden.

Oh they’re lovely for driving. But to get into driving showing costs thousands in harness and a cart, plus the bigger lorry to transport it and that’s after you and the horse have had a couple of hundred hours of practice if you’re both novices.

I had a heavy who drove and worked with a plough before I got him, and I could never afford to show him under harness. It is a rich man’s game sadly.
