has anyone tried it for lameness ??? still not totally sure of the problem, farrier thinks pedal ostostis and vet thinks lamanie (sp) has come away from front of pedal bone he has 60-80 % inflamation around that area,he is on 2 danilon a day but is still not 100 % sound so she has given me belladonna to try and see if it will reduce the inflamation !!! im at my wits end as there is still no solid outcome

If the laminae are separating from the internal structures of the hoof, then I'm not surprised that he's not 100% sound. That's exactly what starts to happen in laminitis. So I guess your horse is being managed the same, ie deep soft bed, etc etc. I'm not exactly sure what the question is. I would have thought that the vet would have given you detailed care instructions to prevent the situation worsening? I suppose the burning question is has laminitis caused inflammation or is the inflammation causing laminitis. If it was me and the best my vet could come up with was questions and belladonna, and my horse was facing founder or worse, I'd get a referral immediately to a specialist clinic and/or seek some experienced advice from the Laminitis Trust.

The only use I've ever heard of for homeopathic belladonna is for neurological cases since poisoning by belladonna causes seizures and muscle spasms.

its not food induced laminitis, basically my farrier said that it is pedal ostostis or pedal arthritis what ever you want to call it it is the same, the prognosis is not good so it is just a case of keeping him comfortable untill i have to make that dredded step to have him pts,its been a horrible time for me and im gutted but there is not much more we can do apart from the danilon and lots of big hugs and tlc.

Belladonna acts upon every part of the nervous system, producing active congestion, furious excitement, perverted special senses, twitching, convulsions and pain. It has a marked action on the vascular system, skin and glands. Belladonna always is associated with hot, red skin, flushed face, glaring eyes, throbbing carotids, excited mental state, hyperaesthesia of all senses, delirium, restless sleep, convulsive movements, dryness of mouth and throat with aversion to water, NEURALGIC PAINS that come and go suddenly. [Oxytropis.] HEAT, REDNESS, THROBBING AND BURNING. GREAT CHILDREN'S REMEDY. Epileptic spasms followed by nausea and vomiting. SCARLET FEVER and also prophylactic. Here use the thirtieth potency. EXOPHTHALMIC GOITRE. Corresponds to the symptoms of "air-sickness" in aviators. Give as preventive. NO THIRST, ANXIETY OF FEAR. Belladonna stands for VIOLENCE of attack and SUDDENNESS of onset.

Extremities.
Shooting pains along limbs. Joints swollen, red, shining, with red streaks radiating. Tottering gait. Shifting rheumatic pains. Phlegmasia alba dolens. Jerking limbs. Spasms. Involuntary limping. COLD EXTREMITIES.

Sounds like you need a new vet to me.
If your considering belladonna for a horse that still lame on danilion and saying that your considering options before you have to go down the PTS route i dont understand why you arent using more reliable drugs?
ones that have to go through the rigorous trials before they can be used in animals.where the side effects as well as the benifits are known.
or maybe im reading completely wrong into the situation.

how long has the horse been lame? What treatment have you used already?

Was that at me?

Belladonna is used for heat, sweating & pain. Throbbingness. So for pain in hooves with laminitis or any other condition it is very usefull.

It is also used by farmers for mastitis when the udder is hot & swollen.

It eases the symptoms.

the belladonna ive been given is a teaspoons worth,i have only been given 5 packets, its to ease the inflamation quicker, its not a long term treatment, the thing is his foot is a totally different shape to the other 3 and this problem has been brewing for years and now has decided to rear its ugly face,he is a 17hh gelderlander(the chestnut in my sig) and very stocky and heavy,he is 23 and has been a hard working professional carriage horse for 18 odd years,my aim now is to keep him as comfortable as i can for as long as i can as his prognosis isnt good,i will keep him on the danilon for as long as i can before he gets to sore and then i will have to let him go,he doesnt deserve to be in pain for ages just because id be to selfish to let him go,i know someone who kept there horse going until the pedal bone went crunch one day and the agony that poor horse was in was imense,i will not be letting my lad get that far,i just want him to be as happy and as pain free as i can untill that dreaded day,im am not looking forward to that

If its a short term solution i dont see any harm i trying it out to see if it has effects for your boy (whos gorgeous by the way) Will you let us know if it has any benifit?im a bit sceptical about the homeopathic remedies,as you might have guessed, but if it does help then its well worth using!

Good luck with your boy either way.its a terrible thing wondering whats going to happen in a condition like lami is lurking
