Hi Guys,

Some of you have been sweet enough to enquire about Bentley's progress with the rumbling lameness problem he's been struggling with since February

I am gutted to report that just a week after he has been back out in the field on restricted grazing, having had yet another month on box rest and steroid injections directly into his coffin joint, that he is very lame again.

We have a vets appointment on Thursday, but they are very practical people and I'm 99% sure they will confirm there is nothing else we can do for him; they advised before the injections that the fail rate is high and their opinion was guarded.

If anyone has any pearls of wisdom or any alternative ways to proceed that don't involve having my big grey 4yr old PTS I would be delighted to hear them

Oh god i havent followed you post about this but how horrible to read that its not looking good for your boy. I guess he's the one in the sig? He's very handsom.

I have no words of wisdom of ideas but have a (((hug))). I really hope there is another way they can help him.

really sorry to hear this. what's he done to himself?
after the box rest, if he's not too sore to potter about in the field, could you give him a dose of Dr Green for a year or two (literally)? it is sometimes amazing what Nature can do if given enough time.

So sorry to hear this. With him and Arch going through similar sorts of things I've always taken an interest in how he's doing.

Arch has 1 more cartrophen injenction and then full work up next week so fingers crossed. He seems better in the field but it's a very different thing from being ridden.

I really hope this is just a small set back - could he have tweaked something in the field playing around after being let out?

Am so sorry and sending you lots of hugs. Am in a very similar situation, I have a 7yo that I have had to retire due to injury, and I have now managed to find her an ideal loan home close by as a companion to a little filly. If you don't want to PTS and obviously if vet said he was not in too much pain could you try and find him a companion home?
Fingers crossed for a positive outcome x

((HUGS)) we know how you feel..
We have ongoing coffin joint issues with Jacob

tried everything inc steroids/adequan/cartrophen/IRAP even an arthroscopy operation (after we found him on 3 legs in the field) - which found no tendon or ligament damage but a tiny bone chip and some damaged cartilage was removed. Both the vet and the surgeon cannot believe he is still lame

we have turned him out barefoot and will take a view on him next year. My poor husband and our vet adore this horse and would do anything to get him right but i am feeling quite pessimistic regarding his future

Thanks for the posts and words of support

Yes Bentely is the grey in the siggy, he came in lame from the field in February and after much kerfuffle with the vets and a fair few red herrings along the way, we now think he must have twisted his fetlock or tripped in a rabbit hole in the field and this injury both triggered, and is now being aggravated by, arthritic changes in his coffin joint.

I suspect time spent with Dr Green and lots of prayers is all the vets will have left to suggest as supplements, box rest and steroid injections have had little impact

sorry to hear this - sort of in the same position with mine, but after 18 mths of investigations he was retired at age 7.

Has IRAP been ruled out? Have heard it is really good for arthritis, and works where steroids havent.

That's horrible. Bentley is my favourite horse on HHO, he's so gorgeous, exactly my type. Miracles have been worked with a year on the green if you can afford it and he isn't too sore pottering etc

*hugs*
