Having got 2 dogs with high prey drive and I so sympathise with that poor guy. Our fields are riddled with deer and there is even one sleeping the other side of the hedge at the top of my garden.
Avoidence is my main tactic but sometimes they jump out in front of you and thats it biscuits, chicken, balls just dont cut it. Good recall at other times they just shut down when they see deer, lots of walking across the field singularly on long lines but there are never any deer.
So watch the postman Spudlet 2 Dobes on their way and I expect them to be deer proof when they come back. Send Henry to me and I will picnic proof him.
Oh dear Been there, done that and used very similar language but Maisie being a lurcher was even faster and stayed away for 8 hours Needless to say she is now always on the lead. The deer round here seem to be particularly thick and just stand and look at you for 5 minutes before taking off ! Spudlet is there room on your course for another reprobate, although since she's now 9 it may be too late
Another one who recognises the panic in his voice, deer are the one thing I have no recall from and there seem to be more around in unexpected places, one popped out of some bushes round the local playing field the other day. When I was looking for a holiday cottage in the New Forest one of the selling points seemed to be " deer come into the garden" which was my worst nightmare. Wish you were closer Spudlet, I would be another one booking your courses.
Adding to the picnic tales, I was at a local show when a call went over the tannoy: "Would the owner of the labrador in the Judges food tent please retrive her immediately"

No it wasn't mine although she would have done if she wasn't on a lead, it was the resident yard lab who unfortunately is no longer with us. She was the most beautiful dog and an aunt to my lab Tiggy who passed away last year.
