To save keep typing the recipe, I thought I'd put it here. I use this on my sweet itch mare and it's the only thing that saves us from her self harming. Sometimes I leave it too long and then I'm playing catch up, but when I'm consistent and apply this every 3-4 days, she's grand, if a little smelly.
75 g emulsifying wax (Amazon)
100 mL Neem oil (Soapery, 1 L)
100 mL benzyl benzoate (bought neat as 500 mL bottle - I forget where!)
A few drops of tamanu oil (Soapery, 100 mL)
I think the whole lot costs me less than £50 including postage, but each lasts years. So long, I've never ordered BB from the same place twice, i don't think!!
Boil the kettle with 1 L water in it.
Melt the wax either in a heat proof bowl in a saucepan or microwave (I use 40 % power in 30 second bursts)
Add the BB and stir in. Some wax will solidify, but will dissolve again if you add a little hot water.
I put approx 100 mL neem oil into a funnel placed in a 1 L bottle (I use a Robinsons cordial, because I'm classy). Add a few drops of tamanu oil. It'll sit there, until you add a little hot water and gently swirl to encourage it through the funnel.
Add the BB/wax mix to the funnel. Use more hot water to rinse the bowl/container used to heat the wax and rinse the funnel with that.
Top up the bottle to 1 L with hot (not boiling) water.
Keep inverting every 30 seconds or so (with lid on!!) until the ingredients stop separating. Takes a few minutes and it sets to a thick lotion.
Apply as a lotion to unbroken skin. I use it on face, inside and outside of ears, base of mane and dock, inside armpits, mid-line and teats/sheath. Application is every 3-4 days. It's pretty weatherproof due to the wax/oil content.
It's lovely on our skin, too (assuming no allergies to any of the ingredients!) and I find poo picking much more pleasurable if I do it after applying this. Great for social distancing in the supermarket afterwards, too...
I also use this if I can't reach a tick (on the sheath/teat, or inside the ear). I put a little blob on and the tick soon drops off.
It can be made thicker simply by adding more wax, but I find 100 g (10 %) too thick for a bottle. You'd need a big butter tub or similar.
