Would someone kindly tell me why Bernard Matthews is getting compensation for bringing Bird Flu in to the country??????????

Oh don't start me on that man!!! He is singlehandedly responsible for not only bringing in bird flu (allegedly), but the (IMO) poor treatment of literally millions of defenceless birds. Apart from the intensive farming and all the suffering that potentially entails, there was a recent court case where undercover reporters filmed two of his employees playing baseball with a turkey. One threw it in the air, the other swung at it with a broom. Sickening. As for the stuff he produces - words fail me. I hope this is not considered to be defamatory.

because that is the law

what is wrong is that his poor bio-hygiene - which was photographed - has not resulted in a fine - and the size of the fine is the issue

The 'standard' DEFRA fine for 'non-compliance' with their many rules and regs is £5000.

Now to small farmers and smallholders 5k is a lot of money - so we all obey the rules and do as we're told

5k to BM is loose change - and obeying the rules by having e.g. proper covered waste containers - would cost BM LOTS more than 5k

so the 'bean counters' win the day and say - ignore the regs - if we get caught then the fine is 5k whereas if we do as we're told it'll cost us (and of course the shareholders) 100k

no contest

time has come for the size of the fine to match the turnover of the company concerned....

I was reading something similar the other day, about two coffee shops in a British High Street. One was owned by a multi-national chain, the other independent. (Think this was in the Big Issue). Anyway, the chain one had chairs and tables outside to attract clientele in the warm weather, the smaller one didn't because local bylaws forbade it. However, the extra revenue the chain gets from people sitting outside pays for their umpteen lawyers to take on the council over the issue. So it boils down to the fact that if you have enough money, you can ride roughshod over rules and regulations.

I don't understand. Are you saying that the law is you get compensated for destruction of livestock even if you could be found responsible for introducing the disease in the first place???

he's getting compensation for the healthy birds that got culled

I think the rule should be that the source of the outbreak doesn't get compensation - but that isn't the way it works atm

I'd like to make him live in one of his sheds, in the overheated, cramped conditions, sitting in his own poo with his eyes stinging from all the ammonia in the air.

My grandfather was a chicken farmer & kept the birds according to the exact letter of the law... but unfortunately the laws are barbaric. 10 mins in one of these sheds would have you desperate to get back out.

totally agree - and the ultimate product of all that suffering is tasteless

makes me annoyed when people keep on about only eating chicken 'cos red meat is bad for you - I keep pointing out that whilst pork, veal and poultry can be mistreated legally it is a LOT harder to mistreat cattle and sheep - hence lamb and beef are far more likely to have been humanely produced than other meat

i would sooo love to answer this but it will be deeemed defamatory and i will be banned

Apparantly the compensation is for the feed that the healthy birds ate and the money paid out in wages to raise the birds etc, that he has now lost in potential revenue because they have had to be culled.
Seems utterly barbaric that £60,000 is going to a man that can keep birds in that condition and brought avian flu into the country!

Come to think of it even that would have been blasphemy.

If you do have to utter oaths perhaps you could be so kind as to linit yourself to an OM in future.

The law is a complete ******* **** IMO! I have boycotted BM products for many years, its ashame the rest of the country doesn't!
Utterly ridiculous, I woudln't be soo worried that if his Turkey were Suffolk rather than Norfolk but their Hungarian!!!
He should be fined £m's for bringing Bird Flu into the country rather than be compensated IMO! Grrrrrrrrr!
Fines should be in keeping with the size of the business don't you think!
