Hi.

Has anyone ever ridden on these. I'm hoping to go this weekend, but worried about mud bits that you can sink into. Is it best to ride between high tide and low tide, or at high tide, is there enough beach?? help!

thanks

We used to go a low tide, you park right on the beach - com in through burnham way and just beyond Brean holiday park turn left into the car park. There is a sign which details charge for horse lorry and that car park doesn;t have an overhead barrier. the lorries park to the left of the entrance. We would then ride down towards the pier at Burnham. Never near the sea at low tide as there are mud areas. We used to go down there a lot in 2001 when the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean were under the Foot and Mouth restraints, and never had a problem with the mudflats, You can actually see them, they look different to the sand.

Brean and Berrow are wonderful for riding - I'm sure you'll have a blast. Fwiw, I personally do not ride at low tide because of the mud. Although you can in theory stay higher up the beach and avoid it, I would worry too much about what would happen if my horse got loose and strayed into the mud. I tend to go near to high tide so we can have a splash in the sea, but avoid full high tide because there is sometimes not enough beach to go around between the riders, walkers, fishermen etc.

Have fun!

My friend goes regularly and she goes 2hrs either side of high tide. At low tide you can hardly see the sea and I'd be worried about what would happen if neddy got loose as mentioned above. The muddy bits and soft sand are not nice! I keep meaning to go but not got round to it yet, have fun!

I did ;) have returned PM to the OP. was it a bit too war and peace like tbc? :p

I don't do splashing in the sea there really :o don't trust the footing underneath without being to see it, having seen a 16.2 disappear to his ears.. he did pop back up again :D. IMO its something only be done on a very high tide.. though pref not on a 12.2 pony that drops you in it :o oops!

and I basically adovcate sensible riding, keeping an eye on what you are on, and not to go hunting for the sea ;) :D.

If my ned got loose he would look at me like I was an idiot (as always) I think it would be very odd for them to head out to sea, most of ours have been a bit nervous at the lack of 'horizon' in the first instance.
